About / Description

Because of the risk of hazardous bacteria in sewer water, very special attention is required when coming in contact with any kind of water damage as a result to a sewer backup. Breathing the odor from sewage might create a serious health risk for the exposed person that could possibly last for years and attribute to other respiratory problems.

Bacteria have the ability to spread by touching the contaminated area and transferring the bacteria to something or someone else. The Safedry approved companies abide by all of the OSHA and other federal mandates in concerns to the proper protective clothing and eye protection. Respirators are worn when there is any possibility that the air is unsafe to breathe. Safedry members always follow local and state regulations strictly when handling any contaminated sewage damaged materials.

Symptoms

Sewage falls under four different classes that include agriculture, industrial, commercial, and sanitary. The sewage that comes from a residence is called sanitary or domestic and examples of domestic sewage is washing water, carrying body waste, food waste and laundry waste. These are typically broken down into two classes, black water and gray water.

Black water is the waste water from a toilet or urinal, this water will have contamination from blood borne pathogens and other forms of human decease. The gray water is usually everything else, like the sinks and bathtubs/showers, this water is less dangerous but still can create illness and decease.

Causes

Some of the more common causes for a sewage cleanup are a toilet overflow or a plugged drain resulting in a sewage backup. Many times when the main sewer pipe gets clogged and backs up if the house doesn't have a basement and the toilets are on the main floor, the sewage will seep out from under the toilet causing water damage. Of course this water damage has water that is contaminated and if that water saturates into a carpet, the carpet would be ruined and need to be replaced. A wall that has that sewer water seep into would require deep cleaning, decontamination or a new wall built.

Procedure / Solutions

When Safedry dispatches a fully trained, water damage repair specialist, they will quickly assess the extent of the sewer water damage, they will check to see what items have been exposed and to what degree of contamination. If the area is under a great deal of water, they might need to extract the water using a pump. Sometimes, in the case of a flood, the city's main sewer pipes become filled to the point that the water will come back into your home, in these cases, pumps will most certainly be used to rid the home of the massive amount of sewer water. When the water has been completely removed and the home has been dried, they will thoroughly decontaminate and sanitize the area using highly effective cleaning agents. If necessary the licensed construction team will make any repairs to get your home back to pre-loss condition.

Cost

The cost will be based on the amount of sewage cleanup, any other water damage, level of decontamination and the extent of reconstruction. Safedry estimators have completed extensive training in the efforts to provide an accurate and fair proposal. They examine and compare material cost constantly to stay well informed of changing prices.

Tips / Prevention

Keep your drains and sewer pipes well maintained, using natural enzymes to keep you pipes free of sludge buildup. Install water sensors behind your toilets and under sinks to notify you of the first signs of an overflow or some other water damage.

Comments

Sometimes we see in homes that have wall hung toilets, the gasket that goes between the toilet and the wall fails. The waste water from the toilet seeps into the wall and through to the other side causing damage to the carpet and any other thing that it comes into contact with. If the toilet backs up to a closet, the homeowner doesn't notice until they retrieve something from the closet. But that may be a considerable time later.
