Hoarding >> How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother

What is the definition of compulsive hoarding? There is a three-part definition to compulsive hoarding behavior:1. It is the accumulation of, and failure to discard, a large number of possessions that appear to be useless or of limited value.2. Living spaces become so cluttered that they can't be used for the How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother activities they were intended for.

3. The hoarding behavior causes distress and impaired functioning. 2. What are some of the behaviors associated with hoarding? Compulsive buying or collecting free things Saving all of these possessions; How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother having great difficulty discarding anything Failure to organize or maintain all the possessions 3. What causes hoarding?

While the exact causes of hoarding are unknown, there is evidence that people who hoard have a different way of processing information. They tend to pay attention to all the visual and tactile details of an object, even if it has no apparent value or function, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother like a bottle cap or an empty carton. They also try to organize their lives visually and spatially rather than categorically.

There does seem to be a genetic link because hoarding runs in families. Hoarding may be exacerbated by a traumatic event, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother such as the death of a loved one or a long illness. Should I just go in and clean out the home of my loved one who has a hoarding problem? No, it's never a good idea to organize a clean up without the person's permission.

The results can be traumatic for the person with a hoarding problem; some people have even committed suicide after having their possessions discarded. Many family relationships have been fractured because the hoarder often feels a trust has been broken. At the least, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother you'll end up even more frustrated, because the hoarding will continue and the cleaned out areas will fill up quickly.

It is better to encourage the person who hoards to seek treatment with the hope that they'll recognize the problem and learn to modify the behaviors. If the popularity of the cable television show Hoarders is any indication, we have a fascination with hoarding."We all love a good train wreck," says Mark Odom, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother clinical consultant to the Orange County (Calif.) Task Force on Hoarding.

And, he says, many people, including psychiatrists, think hoarders are obsessive-compulsive. It's even listed that way in the bible of psychiatric disorders, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother the DSM IV.But this isn't necessarily true, according to several studies presented at the annual conference of the American Society on Aging, which wrapped up this weekend in San Francisco.

Hoarders are more likely to be depressed, anxious or have social phobias than to have obsessive-compulsive disorder. And the problem worsens with age.University of California, San Francisco researcher Monika Eckfield studied 22 older adults and found that changes in their social environment created boredom and How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother isolation.

So, for some, shopping became a socially-appropriate way to interact with the world. And then, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother they didn't get rid of anything after they brought purchases home. All 16 women and six men described "blockages," with no motivation to discard many things, though no one kept everything. One woman said her house was "constipated," Eckfield reports.

And the hoarding was not because they had lived in the same place for decades. Even people who moved in the last five to 10 years didn't purge when they moved. They hired helpers, who packed, moved and then stacked boxes. Eckfield said their homes "looked like storage lockers." In fact, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother because they seemed to lack the capability or help to unpack, and then they couldn't find things like kitchen supplies, they went out and bought even more stuff.

In the March issue of the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, R. Scott Mackin, also from UCSF, and How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother a team of researchers found that about 15 percent of older adults with depression had "severe compulsive hoarding behaviors," while just 2 to 5 percent of non-depressed older adults are hoarders.

He notes that both depression and hoarding are "frontally mediated." That is, both seem to affect the frontal lobes of the brain, which are associated with planning, motivating and How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother organizing. The hoarders Mackin studied had much more trouble categorizing objects (such as sorting cards based on color or shapes) and solving problems.

These "cognitive deficits" need to be taken into account before intervening to clean out the hoarder's home, the team concluded. Christiana Bratiotis, director of the Hoarding Research Project at the Boston University School of Social Work, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother says cognitive behavioral therapy can help. Prior to a recent study the school did with the Elder Services of Merrimack Valley in Massachusetts, the agency used only big clean ups to clear the clutter.

She said 100 percent of the time, the elders began hoarding again immediately. And they were angry, distressed and distrustful of anyone (family members, social workers) who tried to intervene again. For their study, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother social workers visited 26 people, ages 60-90, weekly for up to a year. They found that the older adults described themselves as pack rats or collectors, not hoarders.

The social workers worked with them slowly, to reduce the mistrust and to build organizing skills. They put the hoarders in control of all the decision-making, except eliminating imminent risk (such as papers on the stove) and found that by the end of the year, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother most could tolerate incremental changes and none had been evicted.

That squares with the Orange County task force's experience. Mark Odom notes that an effective strategy for them is to emphasize "harm reduction." He said by invoking regulation enforcers, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother such as landlords or fire departments, hoarders had "exterior motivation" to clear at least some of the clutter."It's about house safe and functional," he said, "not house beautiful."

This website is intended as an international forum for service providers and organizations to obtain and share information concerning the development and administration of collaborative, community based interventions for hoarding disorder, including animal hoarding.Communities around the world are beginning to recognize that hoarding disorder and related animal hoarding is a problem that requires a coordinated, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother collaborative effort from many different public and private systems.

These communities are discovering that a Hoarding Task Force approach is an effective method of addressing these complex issues.Hoarding task forces, collaboratives, networks and How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother work groups are springing up in many geographic areas, from remote rural districts to burroughs and neighborhoods in urban areas.

Some are strictly comprised of governmental agencies, many others include public and private organizations. Some have immediate success, others struggle. Some individuals and How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother organizational representatives want to start these efforts but are not sure how to begin.

We hope that task forces and other organizations that work collaboratively to impact hoarding participate in this effort to improve community-based hoarding interventions by sharing the challenges, successes, How To Deal With A Hoarder Mother and lessons learned in the development and operation of their association.
