Emergency Board up >> Fire Damage

Artistic Fire Damage means painting on material that is used to secure door, window, or other openings to resemble the original opening which they are covering. There is to be no standard pattern requirement. The overall purpose is to have a structure that does not draw attention to the eye of someone that is casually passing by. The problems with the traditional boarding is the color of the plywood or lack of. The color of the plywood is tan, that is kind of earth tone.

  1. There are few structures that have matching color schemes. The change in weather causes unprotected wood to warp and will splinter with time. After a Fire Damage the structure looks out of place in the neighborhood. It quickly will draw attention to itself, because the damaged structure calls attention to itself, it leads to graffiti or other various illegal activities. The nailing of boards to materials such as door frames will make it easy for someone to simply pull the wood loose so they can enter the property. The material that is securing the opening is painted to resemble the door or the window that it is replacing.
  2.  And since the material is painted it is also protected against the weather and does not look just like a boarded structure. The structure will blend in with the other and undamaged structures in the neighborhood. This will reduce the effect that the boarded structure will have on the surrounding neighborhood. Since the Fire Damage structure does not single itself out as a target, the illegal activity is decreased. Using regular approved board up standards increases the security of the damaged structure.
  3. Protecting Fire Damage buildings from the weather and from illegal entry could be accomplished by improving security, organizing block watches, improving lighting, periodic patrols, and by following these directions. Turn off all water at the street and drain the entire system to its lowest point. Leave all faucets open and put anti-freeze in all P-traps containing water. Have the local utility company disconnect electricity at the street and remove and cap all meters. Shut off the LNG supply at the street and disconnect and remove LPG and the heating oil tanks. Remove all of the upholstered furniture, combustible materials and trash from the Fire Damage building, including the basement and attic.
  4. Remove all trash and trash containers and any combustible furniture from the exterior stairwells, porches, fire escapes and the outbuildings. Remove the shrubbery and any vegetation that can support or spread a fire. Cut the plywood to fit over the window and all door openings, flush with the outside of the brick molding. For Fire Damage buildings with all metal door and window frames the only alternative is to cut the plywood and 2x4s to fit on the inside of the door frame butted up against the band molding. Cut all of the 2x4s to fit the horizontal dimension of the plywood, you will also need two 2x4 exterior and then two interior braces for each window and three sets for every door.
