Emergency Board up >> Flood Damage

Most of the time when there is a tornado or hurricane, there is a certain amount of Flood Damage, from a long period of rain before, during and after the epicenter of the storm. In order to make preparations for a long duration of steady wind, rain and flying debris, is a good idea to secure your home at its vulnerable points like your windows and double doors that have an active and an inactive or fixed door. Check to see how the fixed door is secured at the top and at the bottom.

  1. Installing slide locks, these are also called head and foot bolts, that are at the top and bottom will further strengthen and secure the door. Ensure that the deadbolt locks are mounted securely to the sub-floor and into the door header, not just into the trim. To strengthen your hinge side against Flood Damage, ensure at least three of your hinges are properly installed with the hinge screws penetrating all the way through the doorjamb into the studs. The bolts or hinge pins that secure most doors are not going to the strong enough. Some exterior door manufacturers provide reinforcing bolt kits made specifically for their individual doors.
  2. Check with your local hardware and building supplies retailer to find out the type of bolt system will work for your door. The exterior door bolt materials should cost from $10-40, depending on the kind and finish. Exterior doors with windows will need additional protection from flying debris and Flood Damage. And because of their width, double-wide garage doors are even more susceptible to wind damage and Flood Damage than single doors. Unless you have a tested hurricane-resistant door, the wind might force it out of the roller track, and especially if the track is made of light weight material or some of the anchor bolts are not in place.
  3. This occurs because the garage door deflects too much under constant, excessive wind pressure and fails. If the garage door does fail, the high winds can enter your home through the garage door opening and blow out doors, windows, walls, and even your roof. In certain parts of the country they have building codes requiring garage doors to withstand high winds and Flood Damage. Check with your local building code inspectors to see if there are any code requirements for garage doors in your particular area. Some garage doors can also be strengthened with retrofit kits. Check with your local building supplies retailer and hardware specialist to see if a retrofit kit is available for your make of garage door.
  4. And him and You can expect to pay from $70-150 to retrofit your garage door. Many garage doors can also be reinforced at their weakest points. Retrofitting the garage doors will involve installing horizontal reinforced bracing onto each panel. This horizontal bracing could be part of a kit from your garage door manufacturer. The garage door industry does strongly recommend that any determination concerning the need to strengthen, reinforce or replace a garage door will be based on an inspection by a trained door systems technician or a qualified Flood Damage professional engineer
