If you live in a part of the country that have storms on a somewhat regular basis, like if you live in an area that constantly has hurricane damage. You might be able to prepare yourself and your home for the ensuing storm by protecting the most vulnerable areas like your doors and windows. The amount of time and effort that you put in now will certainly pay off later when you will not have to deal with any extensive Storm Damage.

  1. One of the more vulnerable areas to Storm Damage is the garage door and by adding weight to a garage door for reinforcement purposes may require an extra adjustment to or the replacement of the door’s counterbalance system. Only a trained garage door systems technician should perform the minor adjustments or replacement. If you decide that you must retrofit your garage door with a reinforcing kit that will allow you to operate the door even after it is installed, make sure that the door is balanced. You might also need heavier hinges and stronger center supports and end supports for the door to withstand Storm Damage. Check both of the tracks on your garage door.
  2. With both of your hands, grab a section of each track and see if it is loose or if it can still be twisted. If so, an even stronger track should be installed. Be sure that it is anchored to all of the 2 × 4s inside the wall with heavy steel bolts or properly attached to masonry using expansion bolts. Then after you have retrofitted your door, you may need to check to see if it is still balanced. To check, you should lower the door about halfway and then let go. If it goes up or down by itself, the springs will need adjusting. The springs are very dangerous and they should be adjusted by a door professional.
  3. If you are not able to retrofit your door, you can always purchase specially reinforced garage doors designed to withstand Storm Damage winds of up to 120 miles per hour. These doors should be installed by a door professional. During Storm Damage, the force of the wind will push against the outside of your home. The wind force is passed along from your roof to your exterior walls and finally to your foundation.
  4. Homes can be wind damaged or destroyed when the energy from the wind storm is not properly transferred back to the ground. The first thing you should always do is determine what type of roof you have. Homes that have gabled roofs are more likely to suffer Storm Damage during a hurricane. A gabled roof looks a lot like an A on the ends, with the outside wall going away to the top of the roof. The end wall of a home that have a gabled roof takes a real beating during a hurricane, and those that are not properly braced could collapse, causing major Storm Damage to the roof.
