Document restoration >> Methods To Restore Lost Documents

Materials that are durable and chemically stable should be used throughout the binding process. Of greatest concern are the endpapers, Methods To Restore Lost Documents which come in direct contact with the first and last pages of the book. Endpapers should be alkaline and meet ANSI Standard Z-39.48-1992.

Ask the binder to return old labels, bookplates, and anything else that may be of special interest. Urge the Methods To Restore Lost Documents binder to call you whenever questions arise regarding materials or procedures. Each bound volume returned by the library binder should be inspected to insure that the quality of the work is acceptable and specifications have been met.

This is of critical importance in maintaining a high quality product. Guidelines for inspecting bound volumes appear in A Guide to the Library Binding Institute Standard for Library Methods To Restore Lost DocumentsBinding.

Pick off Methods To Restore Lost Documentsaccretions such as insect specks and rust deposits with a scalpel tip, and keep a brush at hand to remove dislodged materials. Do not overdo this work; it is better to leave accretions alone when more aggressive efforts to remove them may inadvertently make a hole in the paper.

For the same reason it is best to avoid inclusions embedded in the paper. These are specks of metal that were in the Methods To Restore Lost Documents paper when the sheet was formed, and that became visible as they oxidized over time. Next, local deposits of grime may be reduced by gentle rubbing with a vinyl block eraser. (Block erasers are not appropriate for cleaning larger expanses of paper.)

Rub in short, meandering strokes to avoid setting up a pattern of erasing marks, and check periodically with a close sideways examination across the surface to make sure the Methods To Restore Lost Documents paper is not being abraded.

Never rub over Methods To Restore Lost Documents media, whether printed or drawn, and do not persist if no improvement is made. Unfortunately, surface cleaning does not remove aged finger marks in most cases. Grated/granulated vinyl erasers are effective for overall cleaning of papers, and can be used on most printed surfaces.

Pour a small amount of the granules on a small spot in as obscure an area as possible, and gently roll the granules in a circular motion with the Methods To Restore Lost Documents fingertips. If this is effective the granules will rapidly become dirty. Satisfy yourself that the granules are lifting nothing but dirt, then carefully brush them away.

After determining that this cleaning will make a worthwhile improvement, proceed with the rest of the surface. Remember, however, that cleaning that is effective in only one area is counterproductive if it leaves the remainder of an Methods To Restore Lost Documents object looking dirtier in contrast.

A bit more thorough Methods To Restore Lost Documents cleaning can be achieved with a vulcanized rubber sponge. This tool is gentle, provided the practitioner is careful, but it is still not normally recommended for use on design areas. Conveniently, the margins of an object often permit more thorough cleaning, and here successful cleaning usually has the greatest visual impact.

Sponges can also be used on the reverse to reduce dirt that might otherwise be transferred during Methods To Restore Lost Documents handling, but take care to avoid notations on the reverse that might have historic significance. Again, rub gently and in random directions if there is any sign of setting up a pattern on the surface of the paper.

Soiled sponge surfaces can be cut away to expose clean surfaces and prolong the usefulness of the sponge. Do not use any moisture with these sponges. Finish by brushing the paper with the soft brush to remove any Methods To Restore Lost Documents crumbs from the sponge.

Granules should not be used in books, as they are sure to become trapped in the Methods To Restore Lost Documents gutter despite the best efforts to brush them away afterward. The soft brush is the best tool for removing accumulated gutter detritus, and vulcanized rubber sponges serve best for removing grime along the other edges.

When leafing through an old book, whether to surface-clean or just to check for the need to surface-clean, be sure to support the book on an appropriate cradle or foam book wedges to avoid unduly stressing the binding. For further information on cleaning Methods To Restore Lost Documents books, consult the NEDCC Preservation Leaflet.

Tears are repaired most often to improve the appearance of a torn paper artifact, to prevent a tear from lengthening, to keep fragments from separating, or to make an artifact safer to handle. Often tear repairs are part of a conservation treatment performed by a professional conservator, but sometimes owners or custodians of these materials choose to repair them themselves, especially when more elaborate Methods To Restore Lost Documents treatment is not called for.

The generally accepted method of repairing tears and breaks in paper uses strips of thin acid-free paper adhered with a water-based adhesive that is acid-free, stable, and reversible. The following Methods To Restore Lost Documents materials are recommended for the repair of documents, book pages, and other paper objects.

PAPERS

The preferred repair papers are made in Japan usually from kozo fibers. These papers (sometimes erroneously called rice papers) are manufactured in different weights with names such as Sekishu, Tengujo, Kizukishi, and Usumino.

The fiber content of Japanese Methods To Restore Lost Documents papers varies, with some containing fibers that are not of conservation quality. To be safe, only papers made of 100 percent kozo, mitsumata, or gampi fibers, or a combination of these, should be used.

These Japanese papers are appropriate for repairs because they do not discolor or become brittle over time, and they have long, strong, flexible fibers that produce a lasting Methods To Restore Lost Documents repair.

The lighter-weight Methods To Restore Lost Documents papers are especially suited to the repair of documents, since they are translucent and unobtrusive, and may not obscure the text of a document. Most conservators use strips of paper with torn rather than cut edges, because a frayed edge makes a less visible repair and is less likely to deform the paper.

ADHESIVES

Use of a proper Methods To Restore Lost Documents adhesive is essential. Any adhesive used for mending paper objects must have the following properties: Sufficient strength:It should maintain its adhesion for an indefinite period. No tendency to discolor:It should not yellow, darken, or stain the paper to which it is applied. Reversibility:It should be possible to remove the repair paper with moderate effort and no damage to the Methods To Restore Lost Documents object, even after many years.
