Wind Damage >> Wind Damage To Trees

Wind damage to trees AL FERRER SEMINOLE COUNTY URBAN HORTICULTURIST The impact of hurricanes on trees varies from simple defoliation to broken branches, split branch crotches and trunks, leaning or falling trees. While no tree can be guaranteed to stand up to hurricane-force winds, there are some trees that are more resistant to wind than Wind Damage To Trees others.

Therefore, selecting trees with resistance to wind damage seems to be a logical step to take when planning your landscape. The tree should have a strong root system and Wind Damage To Trees good branch and trunk strength. It should also be pruned from the beginning to develop a strong framework and will also allow free air movement.

Trees and their resistance to wind: From surveys after panhandle hurricanes Erin and Opal in 1995 and Wind Damage To Trees Camille in 1969, it was evident that some trees had better resistance to hurricane force winds. Sabal palm, our State Tree, and Live Oak were found to be highly resistant to strong winds. Other very resistant trees are Southern Magnolia, Sand Live Oak and Dogwood.

Less-resistant trees include Chinese Tallow, Laurel Oak, Longleaf Pine, Pecan, Red Maple, Silver Maple, Slash Pine, Southern Red Cedar, Sweetgum and Wind Damage To Trees Turkey Oak. The worst trees were Carolina Laurel Cherry and Sand Pine.

A word of caution about pines, it has been observed that even trees that did not show evident damage after the storms, Wind Damage To Trees died within a year after a hurricane.

Crown damage was observed more prevalent on Southern Red Cedar, Sycamore, Silver Maple and Sweetgum. Chinaberry, Ear tree, Acacia and Wind Damage To Trees Silk Oak were observed to sustain heavy damages during hurricane Charley in Central Florida.

Pruning for wind resistance: Wind-resistant trees have one central leader and a well-spaced framework of branches around and up and down the trunk. This ideal form can be structured when the trees are young, Wind Damage To Trees but the growth habit of the tree may change to a multi-trunked spreading structure as it matures.

The tree should have no narrow forks or branches leaving the trunk at an acute angle because these branches are more likely to split under stress. A wind-resistant tree is the result of regular care Wind Damage To Trees during the early life of the tree. Young trees should not be cut back to make them bushy but should instead be pruned to form a strong leader with well- spaced laterals.

Evaluating wind damage to trees: Healthy trees that are defoliated during a wind storm will produce new leaves and will recover quickly. Broken branches should be pruned back to an existing, Wind Damage To Trees healthy branch. Never use the technique called topping or heading back that produces new growth that is weakly attached.

Painting or dressing the wounds is not recommended. If there is evidence of a crack or Wind Damage To Trees split where a major limb meets the trunk and the crack goes into the trunk, the branch should be removed.

If the branch is very large and the crack extends well into the trunk, it is probable that the tree should be taken down to avoid future problems of trunk decay because the wound will not heal. Small leaning trees can be pulled back to their original position and Wind Damage To Trees staked as a tree that has just been transplanted.

They will not require fertilization but will require frequent watering. Adequate watering will be very important for the tree to survive during the following months after the hurricane. Tree cracks in the trunk or Wind Damage To Trees branches are very dangerous and can be serious enough to merit the removal of a tree.

These cracks will not heal and will remain in the tree for the rest of its life, and that area will always be a weak point in the structure of the tree. To make decisions about what to do to a tree that has been damaged by wind during a hurricane, Wind Damage To Trees consult a professional Arborist; they are the only qualified people who can evaluate the damage to a tree.

Above average temperatures and a below average snowpack are allowing road plowing efforts to begin earlier than Wind Damage To Trees normal this spring. The Town of Mammoth Lakes will begin plowing roads in the Mammoth Lakes Basin on Monday, April 23. Opening of the Lakes Basin to vehicles will be dependent upon snow, ice and road conditions.

The Lakes Basin will be open to pedestrian use while the gates are still closed. Visitors should avoid areas where equipment is removing snow or Wind Damage To Trees making road repairs. Visitors should also be aware of hazards in the area, such as wind damaged trees and lake ice that is particularly dangerous during the spring thaw.

CalTrans will begin plowing Highway 203 from Mammoth Mountain Inn to Minaret Vista on Monday, April 23. A single lane will be plowed for administrative access to Reds Meadow Valley to facilitate the cleanup and Wind Damage To Trees repair efforts from the November 30 wind event that blew over thousands of trees in the Reds Meadow Valley.

Pedestrian and bicycle access on the plowed road will be allowed up to Minaret Vista, however all motor vehicles will be prohibited until the road is completely plowed and opened. The Town of Mammoth Lakes, with assistance from Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Wind Damage To Trees will begin removing snow, debris and trees from the Reds Meadow Road as soon as April 25.

Forest Service, National Park Service, contractor and Wind Damage To Trees other crews will resume cleanup and repair efforts in the Valley as soon as the road is cleared.

Due to the complications and hazards associated with roadside cleanup, falling of trees, removal of loose rock and Wind Damage To Trees the repair of the road, pedestrian and bicycle access down the Reds Meadow road past the Minaret Vista Station will be prohibited beginning Monday, April 23.

The closure will be in effect for the entire Reds Meadow Road and all developed recreation areas and campgrounds accessed by the road. The temporary closure will be lifted or modified upon the completion of cleanup and repair efforts. Hikers attempting to exit the Reds Meadow Valley should also be aware of this closure and Wind Damage To Trees make alternative plans.

The Forest Service is asking that the public cooperate and respect this necessary closure to ensure their safety, as well as the safety of the crews working in the area. Anyone entering the closed area may be issued a citation. The closure is in effect to allow completion of cleanup and Wind Damage To Trees repair work so that the area can be opened as quickly as possible for normal summer recreation activities.
