In the case of a severe storm like a tornado or hurricane, the relentless pounding of the wind can cause Water Damage sometimes allowing the water to come in, through either a broken window, a splintered door or maybe some roof damage. Being proactive and planning ahead by the use of installing plywood over your windows and doors will usually pay huge dividends after the storm has died down and the winds have subsided.

  1. When attaching the plywood to the side of your house, the lag bolts should penetrate the wall and the frame surrounding the window at least 1-3/4 inches. For your larger windows, use 3/8-inch lag bolts that will penetrate the wall and frame surrounding the window at least 2-1/2 inches. For your Water Damage windows 3 — 4 feet or smaller that are installed on a masonry house, use 1/4-inch expansion bolts and galvanized permanent type expansion anchors. The expansion bolt shall penetrate the wall at least 1-1/2 inches. For your larger windows, use 3/8-inch expansion bolts that will penetrate the wall at least 1-1/2 inches.
  2. The tools that you will need are a circular or hand saw, a cordless drill with the appropriately sized bits, a claw hammer, and a wrench to fit the bolts. To be safe, always use eye protection and work gloves. Cut the Water Damage plywood for the measurements for each opening. Drill holes 2-1/2 inches from the outside of each edge of the plywood and at each corner and at 12-inch intervals. Drill four bolt holes in the center area of the plywood to relieve the pressure during a strong Water Damage storm. Place the plywood completely over the opening, and mark where each hole position on the outside wall. Drill the holes with the appropriate size and type of drill bit for the anchors. Install the anchors, the plywood, and the expansion bolts to make sure they will fit properly.
  3. On wood-frame houses, make sure that your anchors are secured into the solid pieces of wood that frames the door or window and not into the siding or trim alone. Mark each shutter so that you will know where it is to be installed, and store your shutters and the bolts in an easily accessible place. If the opening is larger than one sheet of plywood, you will also need to make shutters with a 2 — 4 bracing. This Water Damage bracing can be two 2 — 4s at the middle and bottom of the two sheets of exterior plywood, evenly spaced, with the 2-inch side also attached to the inside of your storm shutter.
  4. Attach the 2 — 4s to the outside of your storm shutter with 2-inch, 10-gauge wood screws before installing your shutter. High impact-resistant windows are optimal for windows that are not easily fitted with Water Damage shutters or those that are hard to reach. Make sure to install your impact resistant system on the sliding glass doors because they are larger and more vulnerable to wind damage and debris than regular windows. If these doors cannot be replaced, then at the very least install shutters.
