Emergency Board up >> Wind Damage

During severe thunderstorms, tornadoes or hurricanes, homes may be Wind Damage or destroyed by high winds. Debris that is flying through the air can break windows and splinter doors, allowing the high winds inside the home. In extreme wind storms, the force of the wind damage alone can cause weak areas in your home to fail. Here's what you can do.

  1. Experts who study the durability of Wind Damage homes have found four areas that should be checked for weakness, your windows, doors, the roof, and if you possess one, the garage door. In this fact sheet, we talk about some things you could do to help make your home stronger before the next big storm strikes.

  2. Some of these home improvements are permanent, while others are installed for temporary wind damage protection. It is most important to get prepared before an extreme thunderstorm threatens. Even though these basic projects, if done correctly, could make your home safer during a thunderstorm, they are no guarantee that your home won’t be Wind Damage or even destroyed.

  3. If you are told you must evacuate, do so. The exterior walls, doors, and windows are the protective shell of your home. So if your home’s protective shell is broken, and high winds can enter and put pressure on your roof and walls, causing Wind Damage. You can protect your home by strengthening your doors and windows.

  4. Installing storm shutters over all of your exposed windows and other glass surfaces is one of the best, easiest and most effective ways to protect your home. You should cover all of your windows, French doors, sliding glass doors, and skylights.

  5. There are so many types of manufactured storm shutters available. For more information on manufactured shutters, check with your local building supplies retailer. If you install your own manufactured shutters, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

  6. Before installing these shutters, check with your local building code official to find out if a building permit is required. It is important that you have your own shutters either installed or marked and stored so they be could easily installed during a Wind Damage watch.
  7. Plywood shutters that you can make yourself, if installed properly, could offer a high level of protection from flying debris during a Wind Damage. Plywood shutters could be installed on all types of homes. Be sure to measure each window and each door that has glass, and add 8 inches or more to both the height and width to provide a 4-inch overlap on each side of the window or door.

  8. Sheets of plywood that are generally 4 feet by 8 feet (4 × 8 feet). Tell your local building and hardware supply retailer the size and number of openings you need to properly cover to determine how many sheets of plywood to buy.

  9. To install plywood shutters, you will need several bolts, wood or masonry anchors, with large washers, and 5/8-inch exterior-grade plywood. For windows 3 × 4 feet or smaller that are installed on a wood frame house, use 1/4-inch lag bolts and plastic-coated permanent anchors.
