Animal Damage >> Animals Gnawing On The House

It seems like there isn't any part of your house that animals won't chew on, seems that they like siding and they’ll chew on the lead vent stack covers. So how can we keep this chewing and other forms of animal damage from happening. Squirrels for example must gnaw and must gnaw a lot to keep their teeth from over growing. There are techniques that include natural, chemical, and physical repellents that encourage squirrels to gnaw on something else.

  1. Of course we always want to keep birdfeeders as close to your house as possible, so we could enjoy watching the different kinds of birds. Unfortunately, squirrels and other kinds of animals like the same kind of food and this starts a pattern. If the squirrels are used to eating food by or on top of your house then it might just be natural for them to think that chewing on your house is okay too. So you have to start with moving the birdfeeder as far away from the house as practical, preferably 50 feet or more. Then add some scrap wood or branches near the birdfeeder, this might encourage them to not elsewhere.
  2. The spraying or wiping of repellents on the part of your house that has had animal damage in the past usually works. These include sprays that are made with garlic or onion, cayenne pepper, capsaicin and other commercial repellents seem to work good keeping squirrels and other animals from gnawing. Using a bar of hand soap and rubbing it over the areas that these animals have been chewing will also work.
  3. Protecting the parts of your home that the animals have been chewing on is another good way to protect yourself from animal damage. Putting sheet metal or hardware cloth over the items that squirrels and other animals have been chewing on. If you have trees next year house, pruning back the tree limbs will certainly make it harder for the animals to gain access. If there's a street pole or other kind of post you can wrap sheet metal around it to prevent squirrels from climbing up on them make sure the caller make sure the collar make sure the caller make sure the caller of the repellents for the repellents. Make sure the collar is about six feet high so the animals can’t jump over the protected areas.
  4. Another good recipe for a repellent a form of hot-pepper spray using chopped jalapeno pepper, chopped yellow onion and one tablespoon of cayenne pepper boil them together for 20 minutes in a half gallon of tap water. After straining the mixture thoroughly, put it in a sprayer and apply to the areas of animal damage. This will last between three to five days depending on weather conditions. There are commercial repellents that can help to keep the squirrels and other animals away. Check your local lawn and garden centers.
