Flood Damage >> Basement Drying

Before you can begin to clean up your Basement Drying property, it is very important to carefully document any water damage to the structure. This is very essential not only for your insurance purposes, but also to record important historic building features. If your building components are removed for mold cleaning or repair purposes, a photograph will also help to ensure that they are reinstalled correctly. Take some photographs and make written side notes describing the water damage.

  1.  A video tape recording is also a very effective way to document Basement Drying. Take several photos or videos of any discarded, water damaged items. Because of your intensive water cleanup that takes place following a flood, materials might be carted away before your insurance adjuster is able to assess the property loss. Create an inventory list of found items, the dislodged architectural features, any decorative fragments, and furnishings. Do not throw away water damaged materials at will, the furnishings and any architectural elements can be carried a great distance by the raging floodwaters, and items that are found on your property may be extremely valuable to a nearby water restoration project.
  2. If your building’s basement is flooded, it is very likely that the level of the Basement Drying water in your basement is the same height as the groundwater level outside of your home. And when this happens, pumping the flood water from the basement of your house will do no good. New water damage will continue to seep in until the groundwater level can drop. You should also be aware that pumping flood water from your basement can be very dangerous. This flood water may be providing the necessary pressure to balance the hydrostatic pressure of the outside groundwater.
  3. If the outside groundwater level is higher than your inside basement floor and you pump the Basement Drying water from your basement, your foundation walls might be pushed inward and collapse. If the basement is flooded with several feet of flood water and you are reasonably certain that all of your floor drains are operational, you could assume that the outside groundwater table is very high. It is advisable to leave the flood water in place until the groundwater table can sink and the Basement Drying recedes by itself. If the basement contains only a few inches of flood water, however, you might be able to pump it out safely.
  4.  Always, keep in mind that if the outside groundwater level is higher than the floor, the water will always return. If you can’t pump the flood water out of the basement, you could still begin to ventilate the rest of the Basement Drying building. The sooner these water damaged materials dry, the less chance of water-related problems. Consult with your local health officials to decide if there is any sanitizing agent that could be used to treat of standing flood water in the basement. Flood water can exert tremendous pressure on exterior foundation walls and floor slabs.
