Flood Damage >> Natural Disaster Damage

You could also collect some rainwater and Natural Disaster Damage from streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, and natural springs. But you must be sure you boil any water you plan to drink or use for cooking. Do not drink any floodwater, which is very likely to be contaminated; water from water beds, which has pesticides and other toxic chemicals; or any water that is dark, has an unusual odor, or has any debris floating in it. You will need to maintain your strength, so make sure you eat at least one well-balanced meal each day.

  1. If your cooking stove doesn’t work, you could use your fireplace, that is if the chimney isn’t damaged, candle warmers, chafing dishes, or fondue pots. Charcoal grills and camp cooking stoves must only be used outdoors, and any Natural Disaster Damage must be outdoors. Even in an open carport, a fire could send dangerous sparks into the roof and start a house fire. Canned food is already cooked, so it doesn’t need to be heated, but if you want to heat your food in the can, be sure to open the can and take off the paper wrapper first. If you are without electricity and of course refrigeration, first use up your perishable food items from the refrigerator, then from the freezer.
  2. Open the refrigerator or freezer door very sparingly, only when absolutely necessary, as that lets out the cold. The American Red Cross and other volunteer departments set up shelters for people whose homes were destroyed or too dangerous to live in. The American Red Cross has a massive database to help the people find their family members after a Natural Disaster Damage. Your family members in other places could call their local area chapters, but they must not call the chapter in the disaster area. Don’t turn the power back on after a fire damage if the electrical system was flooded from the fire department water or if you smell natural gas.
  3. Don’t touch any electrical equipment in wet places. Avoid any water puddles and other standing water -- you could get an electrical shock from underground or downed electrical lines. Assume that all Natural Disaster Damage power wires on the ground are alive and dangerous, including your cable TV lines. If you have a gas powered generator, be sure to use the right size and type of power cord. Never run your cords under rugs or carpets, and never connect the generator to another electrical source.
  4. Don’t turn the natural gas back on after a Natural Disaster Damage. Let the utility crews handle that. Only use a flashlight, never use matches or candles. Be wary of leaking gas lines or propane cylinders, gasoline that might have leaked from your vehicles, and lighter fluid or paint thinner that might have spilled. Using fuel-burning devices, like kerosene lamps, wood burning stoves, fireplaces, gas-powered pumps, and generators for indoor cooking, heat, or light should never be used. The carbon monoxide these Natural Disaster Damage appliances give off is invisible and odorless, but could be very deadly.
