When a major natural disaster damages or completely destroys your home or entire neighborhood, everything changes. Whether it’s a massive flood, a stove Water Remediation, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, or winter ice storm, suddenly many things will not work and some things now are not available like food, water, electricity, refrigeration, and the ability to go anywhere. You might need to move fast to get food, water, and shelter, not to mention avoid unaccustomed hazards, and recover property and financial losses.

  1. The first 24 hours are the most important. After you make sure that the ones you love are safely out of harm’s way, you must do the following, you must first make sure everyone is alright. If anyone is hurt, weak, extremely upset, or has any other unusual problems, they must seek medical help right away. Next, check up on your neighbors -- especially any disabled individuals, children that might have been all alone when the Water Remediation struck, and an elderly person that might stay inside from fear or a disability. If you could safely turn off your natural gas and electricity, you should.
  2. Let the utility crews turn them back on when they decide that it’s safe to do so. Don’t be in any urgency to go back into your house. Don’t go in your home if the gas and electricity haven’t been turned off, and do not try to turn them back on yourself. Report any downed electrical lines or broken gas lines right away to your local utility companies. Stay off the highways so that the emergency technicians could move quickly. And you must stay out of their way so they can do their work.
  3. Stay tuned to the radio or TV for the latest news, about what to do, where to go, what Water Remediation places are dangerous, such as roads with fallen trees, unsafe bridges, and how to get a hold of the local natural disaster respite services, such as the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army. Respite services could help with such instant needs as shelter, food, medicine, eyeglasses, and clothing. If there is a fire hydrant next to your home, clear away any shrubs or debris so the Water Remediation department has easy access to it. Contact your employer if you can’t get to work because of the fire damage.
  4. Contact your insurance adjuster or company immediately. A usually active person needs at least one half gallon of water each day, and up to twice that much in hot, humid weather. Little children, nursing mothers, and ill people will need even more. Do not try to ration water. Go ahead, drink what you need, and keep your eyes open for more. You could reduce what you need, however, by reducing your activity and keeping cool. If your Water Remediation water supply is interrupted, you could use water from your hot-water tank, water pipes, ice cube trays, or the reservoir tank of your toilet.
