Meth Lab Cleanup >> Odor Control

An full scale epidemic of small-scale clandestine methamphetamine labs is creating a new Odor Control hazard for all first responders, which includes all law enforcement officers, fire fighters, and other emergency medical workers. Meth could be made in any place and at any possible time. The stuff it is sometimes made from is readily available, the highly toxic and volatile products and chemicals, are usually over-the counter cold medicines containing the drugs ephedrine or pseudoephedrine.

  1. Common household items such as, glass jars, tubing, and coffee making filters. The health and safety of the first responders could be at risk from the meth lab “cook” and the toxic chemicals and chemical by-products from meth production in the labs. The way to help you identify a possible Odor Control is the residence or some of the other building structure could be boarded up or blacked out windows. There may be hoses or tubing running out of a residence or building structure, there might be extension cords running to outbuildings from a residence or other building structure.
  2.  In a Odor Control may be excessive trash, including items such as empty cold medicine packages, antifreeze and drain cleaner containers, coffee filters, batteries, duct tape, and glass chemistry beakers and other containers in or near a residence or other building structure. There will be chemical odors, that smells like cat urine, fingernail polish, ether, industrial cleaning solvents, vinegar, or ammonia in or near a Odor Control residence or other building structures. There might be extensive home or building security, like cameras, monitors and privacy fencing, usually there's visible areas in the yard where toxic chemicals have been dumped or spilled, like dead, dying, or discolored grass and vegetation and stained soil areas.
  3.  There is an increased or excessive activity in or around a residence or other building structure, especially at night, like in excessive amount or more than you would expect, of foot and vehicular traffic coming and going from the location at all hours of the night. There might be dark stains from chemicals that are in the bathtubs, sinks, toilets, or on walls of the residence or the other Odor Control building structures. Dangerous meth users that are at the lab who may be heavily armed and are under the influence of meth could use defensive systems, might be including explosive devices, unsafe mechanical or electrical security devices, or other alarm systems.
  4.  The use of vicious animals, they could have some identified and unidentified toxic chemicals that could be flammable, combustible, reactive, or corrosive. It is important for all first responders to minimize their exposure to the potentially harmful chemicals found at a meth lab site. Exposure usually occurs when the body comes in contact with a toxic chemical agent. A dose is the amount of a chemical agent that the body takes in, possibly by breathing or absorbs. Usually, in toxicology, the dose makes up the poison. Therefore, if first the Odor Control responders could limit the exposure by limiting the on-site time and by wearing protective breathing equipment, they will be limiting the dose.
