Mold Remediation >> Mold Removal

Mold usually grows in extremely damp and humid areas such as basements and bathrooms. Mold Removal from the caulking around your bathtub or shower is very common problem. First, there are different kinds of caulking, the caulking needs to be a mold and mildew resistant type and there's no way to know unless you could talk to the person that applied it. If the caulking is not a mold resisting kind it should be removed, otherwise these are the steps to clean away mold.

  1. The things that you will need is a rag, an old toothbrush and a mixture of a half cup of baking soda and two tablespoons of white vinegar. When Mold Removal make sure the baking soda and vinegar are well mixed together, making a paste. It seems like it's always best to start at one side of the moldy caulking and work your way around.
  2. Take and dip the end of the toothbrush into the vinegar and baking soda paste apply it to the mold, vigorously scrub the area to remove the mold.  Rinse away the loosened mold and repeat until all of the Mold Removal. Extra attention may be required for the corners and the tile grout lines, removing the deeper, harder to get to mold. Check to make sure that there isn't any mold around the soap dish and plumbing fixtures.
  3. Now it's time to make an attempt to keep the mold from growing back, if any small amount of mold is left on the caulking, it will grow back. Mold Removal is a 100% job. The mold will start growing from invisible bacteria. So we have to kill the bacteria and how we do that is by using regular old household bleach. The bleach can be diluted to a mixture of a quarter cup bleach to a half gallon of water. Mix well and put it into a spray bottle. Spray the affected area thoroughly to disinfect and kill any remaining mold. Allow to remain on the surface for fifteen minutes, then rinse with water.
  4. If the caulking is not a mold resistant type then it needs to be removed. There really isn't any easy way to do Mold Removal, it just requires good old fashioned elbow grease. The tools to use are a putty knife and a utility knife (box cutter). It helps to start at one end and work your way around and starting seems to be the hardest part. Take the corner of the putty knife and carefully try to wedge it under the caulking making sure not to scratch the tub. Try to dig out the caulking from the corner where the tub meets the wall, digging out any mold also.
  5. After all the caulking has been removed, clean the loose pieces out and any mold. Spray the area with your bleach mixture, scrubbing it with an old rag. Let in sit for fifteen minutes and rinse with water, dry with a towel. When it comes to Mold Removal buy caulking that says something like tub and tile or kitchens and baths and make sure it says Â"mold and mildew resistant”. Cut tip of the caulking according to how big the opening is, if there happens to be different widths, start with the smaller size. Cut the tip to that size and apply there first then cut the tip again according to the size of the opening.  If mold still grows back there may be a ventilation problem.
