Odor Control >> Fire Damage

Odor Control, Fire damage

During a fire, the smoke could permeate the walls and other surfaces and could drift through the household ducts, where it can become trapped. If the smoke is not properly removed, smoke odor reoccurs from time to time, especially during the warm or damp weather. Consult professional Fire Damage restorers about a process known as "thermal fogging." This type of warm chemical fog penetrates the home and walls of your home just as the fire did, neutralizing the smoke odor as it goes.

  1. Consult the Fire Damage restorers about smoke removal from the ducts, they could use a chemical sealer to secure the smoke permanently to the sides of the heating ducts since these areas, with their joints, cracks and crevices, could be difficult to really clean with the conventional vacuum-and-brush methods. You could consider the replacement of the attic insulation. Insulation might retain the smoke odors. If at all possible, use a chemical sponge that is available from a cleaning supply store or some other non-water-based cleaner to clean soot stains from the walls. Paint thinner or rubbing alcohol might work on Fire Damage, but use with extreme caution because of the toxicity and fumes.
  2.  Wear rubber gloves and a respirator, open all the windows and use an electric fan to increase the ventilation while you're working. Do not use any water-based cleanser on plaster wall boards, it may cause the stain to bleed deep into the wall. After intense deodorizing, it's time to clean your household textiles. Take your non-washable clothing and draperies to a local dry cleaner for a traditional dry cleaning or a special Fire Damage cleaning process. Wash your regular clothing in warm soapy water with a liquid laundry detergent, several launderings might be needed.
  3.  Have your carpets need cleaned twice, both before and after repairs, wet carpets must be dried immediately before cleaning. In most cases, removal of the carpet is necessary for thorough drying and to save the wood grain floor beneath. If the spilled space is confined in your home, open the windows to ventilate the Fire Damage area. Close the exterior door and other openings that may allow vapors to enter your house and cover the crack at the bottom of the door. You should make every possible effort to seal off all air flow between the spill and the inhabited rooms of your home to prevent oil odors from absorbing into your clothing, rugs and other home furnishings.
  4.  You must act as quickly as possible to help lessen the long-term odor problems. To prevent exposure, avoid breathing the oil fumes for extended periods of time and prevent any skin contact. If you have to enter the spill area, wear rubber boots, gloves, a respirator and protective eyewear. If the smoke odor is strong in the living area of your house, consider staying at a motel or with your relatives until the Fire Damage cleanup is complete. Moving out of your house for a few extra days might be a good idea, especially if there are young children, the elderly, or infirmed people in your home.
