Odor Control >> Sewage Cleanup

Occasionally there are homeowners that complain about Sewage Cleanup from their onsite sewage backup. Although many people understand that sewage cleanup has a particular odor, there are steps that can be taken to limit these sewer odors in the home and yard. Gases from an onsite cleanup could be a problem that includes hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and methane gas. Within your home these gases could be irritating, toxic and highly explosive.

  1. In your yard they are not typically found in high enough concentrations to be very dangerous, but still can be a nuisance. Odors inside the house can be both annoying and also a health related problem, odors in a home are generally an indication of a plumbing Sewage Cleanup problem. A common problem is the drying out of a trap in your basement floor drain allowing sewer gases from the septic tank to vent back into your home. This could be corrected by making sure all of your floor drain traps are periodically filled with water.
  2.  Also, the sewer cleanout access plug inside your drain could be loose and may allow for sewer gas to escape. A licensed plumber that provides Sewage Cleanup drain line cleaning could check this out. The second most common problem is the plumbing vent located on your roof, it is also necessary to allow the overall pressure in the drainpipes to equalize as the wastewater flows through them. Without this vent pipe, sinks, tubs, and the toilets would gurgle and may not drain, traps would dry out and the Sewage Cleanup come into the home. These plumbing dry vents can also freeze closed during prolonged cold spells or get clogged with leaves, bird nest or other debris.
  3.  On a warm day or two they will thaw out the frozen pipe but the leaves will need to be professionally cleaned out. The vent pipe can be unfroze using a hydro jetter or warm water, always take extra special precautions when working on an icy or steep roof. The third most common plumbing problem is an unsealed cover on an ejector sump pump basket in your basement, the cover should be checked periodically and a new seal applied to prevent Sewage Cleanup leaks.
  4. An occasional sewage odor near your septic tank could be quite normal although if there is a particularly strong sewage odor around your septic tank(s) the first step should always be to make sure all of your manholes and risers are securely covered. Generally a concrete lid covers the tank manhole, although there are other materials such as plastic and metal lids can be used. The septic tank manhole could be covered with a maximum of 12” of soil or it might come to the surface, while any manhole on a tank with a pump should come to the surface to allow for any repairs or replacement of the pump. The newer plastic lids have a tight rubber seal which helps keep all Sewage Cleanup in the tank. They must also be secured in place with large lag screws or other similar fasteners.
