Odor Control >> Water Damage

A dampness in your home is usually the result from a water incursion either from an internal source, like leaking water pipes or an external sources, such as rainwater due to some kind of storm damage. The intrusion of the dampness becomes a real problem when the various materials in your building, like your rugs, walls, and even ceiling tiles become wet for an extended period of time. We will discuss how to get rid of the moisture and odor in Water Damage.

  1. Excessive moisture in the air, otherwise known as high relative humidity that is not properly removed with air conditioning could also lead to excessive moisture, Water Damage and dampness. Flooding is another cause of dampness and dampness is a major problem in buildings because it will provide the moisture that supports the growth of bacteria, fungi or mold. If there is presence of damp building materials the source of the water incursion is often obviously apparent, you can usually follow the water back to the leaks in the roof or windows or burst plumbing water pipe.
  2.  Although, dampness problems could be less obvious when the Water Damage affected materials and the water source are hidden from view. There could be wet insulation within your ceiling or wall or maybe excessive moisture in the building foundation from the slope of the surrounding land going the wrong direction. In office buildings, schools, and other nonindustrial buildings might develop severe moisture and dampness problems from a leaking roof and window leaks, extra high indoor humidity, and periodic flooding events, among other things. For this Water Damage, we will define "dampness" as the presence of unwanted and excessive moisture in buildings.
  3.  This can also lead to the growth of mold, fungi, and bacteria and the breakdown of your building’s material. We shall use the term "mold" for a group of fungi and bacteria that are often found on wet building materials. Outdoors, molds will live in the soil, on various plants, and on dead or decaying organic matter. There are hundreds of thousands of species of mold and they could be any color. The different Water Damage mold species can easily adapt to different amount of moisture conditions. Extensive research studies have been able to show that exposures to building dampness and certain kinds of mold have been associated with a variety of respiratory symptoms, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, rhinosinusitis, chronic bronchitis, and other respiratory infections.
  4.  Individuals with asthma or hypersensitivity pneumonitis could be at risk for the progression to more severe disease if the relationship between illness and exposure to the damp building where they work or reside is not recognized and the exposures continue. There are certain Water Damage molds that are are toxigenic, meaning they could produce toxins (mycotoxins), but the molds themselves are not toxic, or even poisonous. Hazards presented by these molds that might produce mycotoxins, such as Stachybotrys chartarum, should be considered as the same as other common species of molds which grow in your house or workplace.
