Radon Mitigation >> Radon Test Kits

So you have selected a radon test kit and you have tested your home for radon, but now what? This article is for the people who have tested their home for radon and confirmed that yes, they have elevated radon levels, higher than 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). Select a highly qualified radon mitigation expert to reduce the radon levels in your home by Radon Test Kits.  Determine the appropriate radon mitigation method to maintain your radon gas levels.

  1. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of thorium and uranium in the soil, rock, and water. The air pressure that's inside your home is usually lower than pressure in the soil that is around your home's foundation. And because of this difference in pressure, your house will act like a vacuum cleaner, always drawing the radon gas in through your foundation cracks and other foundation openings. Radon Test Kits could also be present in your well water and can be slowly released into the air you breathe when the water is used for bathing and other household uses. In most cases, radon gas entering your home through the water is a small risk compared with the radon entering the house through the soil.
  2.  In a relatively small number of homes, the building materials like granite and certain concrete products can also give off radon gas, although the building materials rarely cause radon problems by themselves. In the United States, Radon Test Kits in the soil is the principal source of elevated radon gas levels in our homes. Radon is the cause of many thousands of lung cancer deaths each year, in fact, the Surgeon General has warned that Radon Test Kits exposure is the second leading cause of all lung cancer in the United States. Only cigarette smoking causes more lung cancer deaths, so if you smoke and your home has high radon gas levels, your risk of lung or a cancer is especially high.
  3.  But any radon exposure has some health risk of causing lung cancer, so the lower the radon gas exposure in your home, the lower your family's risk of lung cancer. The amount of radon gas in the air is measured in "picocuries of radon per liter of air," or "pCi/L." Sometimes the Radon Test Kits test results are expressed in Working Levels, "WL," rather than picocuries per liter of air, for obvious reasons. A level of 0.02 WL is generally equal to about 4 pCi/L in a typical home. Since you may not see or smell radon, there is special equipment that is needed to detect the Radon Test Kits.
  4.  When you are ready to test your own home, contact your local radon office for information on locating qualified test kits and qualified radon gas testers. You could also order the test kits and obtain important information from the radon hotline. There are two different types of radon gas testing devices, there is the passive radon testing devices that do not need any power to function. These will include charcoal canisters, alpha-track gas detectors, charcoal liquid scintillation devices, and electret ion chamber detectors.
