Radon is a highly radioactive, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gaseous substance, it is formed as the natural deposits of thorium and uranium throughout the earth’s crust decaying process. As the Radon Test decay products are unknowingly inhaled, they could alter the cells in your lungs. These cell alterations may increase the potential for getting lung cancer and radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking.

  1. There is an estimated 14,000 people die of Radon Test related lung cancer each and every year. The amount of radon in a particular building is dependent upon several key factors. These factors will include the geology, a driving force, pathways into the structure of the building, and the average ventilation rate. As the study concentration of uranium is in the underlying soil increases, so does the strength of the radon gas. The radon gas is transported to the buildings more easily through more permeable soils, buildings could create pressure differentials that will draw in the dangerous soil gases.

This concentration level was based on both your health and economics.The easiest way to tell if a building has elevated levels of radon gas is to have it tested and the test kits are relatively inexpensive and easy to use.
  3.  There are two different types of radon tests, first there’s the Radon Test passive tests, this test does not require any electricity or power to operate. It has the big advantage of being very inexpensive, but it will not provide an indication of changes during a longer test period. It generally requires some laboratory analysis to determine the different radon levels. Some of the examples of passive test devices include, some activated charcoal canisters, alpha tracking detectors, and electric ion chambers. The active tests on the other hand are more sophisticated devices that will utilize electronics to provide a long-term, hour by hour reading of radon variations.
  4.  These Radon Test monitors are far more expensive to run, but can give instantaneous test results. Both of the passive and active tests are acceptable methods of testing and the choice of which type to use is largely a personal preference, primarily based on factors such as the cost and timing. No matter what type of test you use, it should meet the EPA proficiency standards. Whichever test kit you use should be placed in lowest possible living area of the house. It should also be placed in a room that is very frequently occupied, but where the high humidity would not be expected. A good location would include one or more of the bedrooms and family rooms. The minimum distances for a Radon Test test device are at least 20 inches above the floor, 4 inches from any other object, 12 inches from your exterior wall, and 3 feet from any outside window.
