Radon is a highly radioactive, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gaseous substance, it is formed as the natural deposits of thorium and uranium throughout the earth’s crust decaying process. It has the big advantage of being very inexpensive, but it will not provide an indication of changes during a longer test period. It generally requires some laboratory analysis to determine the different radon levels. Some of the examples of passive test devices include, some activated charcoal canisters, alpha tracking detectors, and electric ion chambers. The active tests on the other hand are more sophisticated devices that will utilize electronics to provide a long-term, hour by hour reading of radon variations.
  4.  These Radon Test monitors are far more expensive to run, but can give instantaneous test results. Both of the passive and active tests are acceptable methods of testing and the choice of which type to use is largely a personal preference, primarily based on factors such as the cost and timing. No matter what type of test you use, it should meet the EPA proficiency standards. Whichever test kit you use should be placed in lowest possible living area of the house. It should also be placed in a room that is very frequently occupied, but where the high humidity would not be expected. A good location would include one or more of the bedrooms and family rooms. The minimum distances for a Radon Test test device are at least 20 inches above the floor, 4 inches from any other object, 12 inches from your exterior wall, and 3 feet from any outside window.
