Sewage Cleanup >> Basement Drying

Unprotected building occupants and water restoration workers should be evacuated from the Basement Drying affected areas during the beginning stages of decontamination, sewage cleaning, and disinfection, such as until the sewage has been completely removed and the disinfectants applied. The water restoration technicians in the area of the sewage cleanup during the initial stages of decontamination, cleaning, and disinfection should be equipped with their protective gear.

  1.  In the case of overhead sewage contamination, the Basement Drying technicians should also be equipped with their goggles, hard hats, and disposal protective suits. Water restoration technicians should report any open wounds that have occur during the water restoration and take extra care to avoid any "cross-contamination" from affected to unaffected areas by normal foot traffic or building material handling. After the water removal, all affected building materials must be decontaminated by spraying the disinfectant solution. It is not the sole intent of this pre-spray to effect the full disinfection because the presence of molds precludes this.
  2. The Basement Drying goal is to begin the reduction and containment of harmful microorganisms as quickly as possible. All affected building materials should be evaluated for possible contamination. From this important inspection, your building’s materials should be rated as highly porous, in other words completely saturated, semi-porous, or nonporous. Some of your building materials may show varying degrees of porosity, depending on the sewage exposed surfaces. For example, the surface of painted gypsum board has very low porosity, yet the base of the wall might be unpainted or have unprotected drywall that is highly porous.
  3. Highly porous Basement Drying building materials that have been in contact to the sewage backup and have an overall value that exceeds the cost of the water restoration such as highly expensive rugs and carpet, upholstery, and your other textiles should be immediately removed and restored off site. Other highly porous materials with low cost or replacement value, such as your carpet cushion, carpet, cardboard, tackless strip, wicker, and straw, should be removed and thrown away as soon as possible. Other building materials, such as Basement Drying saturated mattresses and cloth upholstery, regardless of value, must not be restored and should be thrown away. If discarding is necessary, these building materials should be sealed in plastic for removal to an approved disposal site.
  4.  Semi-porous building materials items such as linoleum, vinyl wall covering and window upholstery, and hardboard furniture, along with building construction materials such as wood, painted gypsum board, and plaster, should be cleaned, disinfected, or replaced as part of the primary water restoration process. If these building materials are not removed immediately or not properly disinfected, they could become reservoirs for the growth of mold. Nonporous Basement Drying materials such as Formica™, linoleum, vinyl, and floor tile finishing materials should be inspected for subsurface sewage contamination with a non-penetration moisture meter. Although these building materials might be rated as nonporous, they must be inspected carefully because sewage contamination could migrate from the perimeter and become trapped just below the surface.
