Smoke Damage >> Document Restoration

If an expert document restorer is hired, they will remove soot with highly sophisticated equipment and techniques. If you do not plan to hire a Document Restoration, some of the soot might be removed by holding a vacuum cleaner nozzle slightly off the surface of a document item to be cleaned. It is always best not to use your vacuum cleaner attachments with its brushes or upright vacuums because the brushes tend to force soot into the delicate, fragile documents.

  1. Cover your Document Restoration area with plastic after removing the soot, the plastic will prevent the document restoration experts and the inspectors from stirring up the soot in the cleaning area. After the soot removal from your documents, the smoke odor must be removed. . Professional document restorers use some smoke removal techniques in their deodorizing process that will actually break up the smoke molecules to remove the odor. This deodorization process is called the ozone treatment. The smoke odor must be extracted using this ozone room in the restoration company's warehouse,
  2.  it will remain in this facility until it is properly deodorized. The Document Restoration ozone treatment will produce an oxidizing agent that makes the same sweet aromatic sensation associated with a rain storm. The beneficial ozone treatment may be done by a professional document restorer at the home with an portable ozone generator on smaller jobs.  If the Document Restoration procedure is done right at home, your documents, artwork and medical x-rays are put under a tent while the smoke odor extracting ozone generator is operating. All of your important items should be deodorized before they are cleaned; otherwise, the smoke odor could be set in the different materials.
  3.  On-site deodorizing products could be a temporary relief method and deodorizing with perfumes, aerosol sprays, and other disinfectants will only mask the Document Restoration odor. The smoke damage will still persist after the temporary sprays or your perfume evaporates. Also, deodorizing sprays could interact with the smoke odor and make an additional odor problem. Smoke might enter and stay inside the walls of your home and if it is not removed, the smoke odor will reoccur every now and then, particularly in the spring and summer during the damp periods.
  4. Therefore, some action must be taken to properly remove all of your smoke odors .During a house Document Restoration, the heat will expand the pores in the walls and fill these pores with smoke, then after the fire is out and the house cools, the pores will close and trap the smoke odor. Later on, as the days warm the pores will re-open and release the trapped smoke odor, which might settle back on your documents. Professional document restorers will eliminate this smoke odor from your house with a process called thermal fogging, which will open the pores in your home’s walls and will neutralize the smoke odor. There is without a doubt no procedure a home owner could possibly use that would work as effectively as thermal fogging.
