If an expert document restorer is hired, they will remove soot with highly sophisticated equipment and techniques. If you do not plan to hire a Document Restoration, some of the soot might be removed by holding a vacuum cleaner nozzle slightly off the surface of a document item to be cleaned. The Document Restoration ozone treatment will produce an oxidizing agent that makes the same sweet aromatic sensation associated with a rain storm. The beneficial ozone treatment may be done by a professional document restorer at the home with an portable ozone generator on smaller jobs.  If the Document Restoration procedure is done right at home, your documents, artwork and medical x-rays are put under a tent while the smoke odor extracting ozone generator is operating. All of your important items should be deodorized before they are cleaned; otherwise, the smoke odor could be set in the different materials.
  3.  On-site deodorizing products could be a temporary relief method and deodorizing with perfumes, aerosol sprays, and other disinfectants will only mask the Document Restoration odor. The smoke damage will still persist after the temporary sprays or your perfume evaporates. Also, deodorizing sprays could interact with the smoke odor and make an additional odor problem. Smoke might enter and stay inside the walls of your home and if it is not removed, the smoke odor will reoccur every now and then, particularly in the spring and summer during the damp periods.
  4. Therefore, some action must be taken to properly remove all of your smoke odors .During a house Document Restoration, the heat will expand the pores in the walls and fill these pores with smoke, then after the fire is out and the house cools, the pores will close and trap the smoke odor. Later on, as the days warm the pores will re-open and release the trapped smoke odor, which might settle back on your documents. Professional document restorers will eliminate this smoke odor from your house with a process called thermal fogging, which will open the pores in your home’s walls and will neutralize the smoke odor. There is without a doubt no procedure a home owner could possibly use that would work as effectively as thermal fogging.
