Smoke Damage >> Fire Damage

Natural and manmade disasters can make a huge impact on the lives of people, the environment and our economy. Each and every year, the destructive force of house fires have affected thousands of lives. If your home has been in a fire, the Fire Damage cleanup process might need some certain considerations. Here are some useful tips for the various aspects of a fire damage cleanup and salvage. The soot and ash could cause minor irritation to your eyes and skin and can have harmful effects on your health.

  1. Individuals that are sensitive to smoke debris or have respiratory problems or have asthma should be extremely careful around smoke. We try to encourage these individuals that have respiratory issues to avoid doing the Fire Damage cleanup themselves and breathing the harmful air. Smoke damage from fire can irritate your eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs and smoke can cause coughing and wheezing and can make it difficult to even breathe. Try to stay out of the smoke damage and reduce your physical activity if you are subject to asthma or heart disease.
  2.  Wearing a “dust particulate respirator,” using the same filter face mask referred to by Fire Damage, could help protect your lungs from a house fire and smoke exposure. Wearing a respirator mask when cleaning any ash from your house can be helpful and when vacuuming use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, they are very high efficiency particulate absorbing and make sure to change the filter often. When returning to your home that has survived a fire, begin the Fire Damage cleaning by sweeping the ash off of your remaining contents. It is also important to clean the chimney, if your chimney is extremely dirty, call a professional chimney sweep.
  3.  Next, clean the house interior walls and windows, especially the ledges where soot could have built up. Following the rest of the inside of the house by sweeping the soot and ash removal, move on to clean the entire exterior of the home. Removing any fire damaged building materials and finish the Fire Damage by cleaning the remaining windows with a window cleaner. Remember to sweep all of your walkways and driveways to remove any ash and soot. If you are unable to remove any of the soot and ash from your lawn, water it lightly with your garden hose for at least a week, and the soot and ash will eventually recede into the ground.
  4.  Rent a pressure sprayer and pressure wash or scrub all exterior surfaces including your walls, walks, drives, decks, windows and window and door screens. Finish Fire Damage washing all of the interior walls and hard surfaces with a steam cleaner and don't forget the inside of the cabinets, your drawers and closets. Steam the undersides of your furniture, tables and chairs. Launder or dry clean all of your clothing, linens and the bedding and wash all of your movable items, including your picture frames and knick-knacks with a steam cleaner and an extra soft microfiber cloth.
