Smoke Damage >> Odor Control

Smoke damage could be extensive in all areas of your home Odor Control and smoke can destroy your textiles and other building material surfaces. Always follow the cleaning instructions recommended by product manufacturer and your washable textiles may benefit from adding 1 to 2 cups of white vinegar to each of your laundry loads. White vinegar will help in removing the smoke odor and residue from house smoke damage.

  1. Some materials could require up to three to four washings and always remember that water damage could cause mold, mildew and other odors following a house fire, which might require additional enzyme cleansers in order to remove. Your personal computer and other electrical appliances could also be affected by Odor Control, the heat or water. Always disinfect and deodorize your carpets, window coverings, upholstered furniture and mattresses with the use of steam. Your upholstery and fabric window treatments could be spray-treated with your favorite deodorizing products available at most of the supermarkets.
  2.  You must not use odor masking sprays since they just cover up the smoke odor problem and don’t last long term, but steam will actually melt the tar and neutralize the smoke odor and the carbon film left by a house fire, cigarette smoke or wood burning fireplaces and stoves. Have your heating, ventilating and air-conditioning units and all of your ductwork professionally cleaned to remove any soot, ash and smoke residue. Change your air filters when you first return to the Odor Control premises and at least once a month for the next year, vacuum dry any aerial fire retardant or firefighting foam residue from inside your house. Pressure wash your home, and use a steam cleaner to remove the stuck-on soot residue from the inside building surfaces.
  3.  The Odor Control and soot on the ground around your house and in your landscaping will continue to generate smoke odors and airborne particles when the wind blows, so continue to water it down regularly. Until the ash and soot are diluted and absorbed into the your home’s environment, run an industrial indoor mechanical air filtration system to minimize the uncomfortable and potentially health-threatening impact of these toxic pollutants. Many factors could affect your food that has been exposed to Odor Control including the heat, toxic fumes, smoke and the chemicals that were used to control the fire.
  4. Dispose of all of your fresh food that shows signs of fire damage from heat or smoke. Any other food that has come in direct contact with liquid waste, sewage, firefighting chemicals and flood waters may be damaged and should be disposed of. Any food that is displaying an off smoke odor or signs of premature spoilage should also be thrown out. If you have food such as grains or flour is caked, and it doesn’t flow freely, or is more than likely contaminated with Odor Control, water, or chemicals, you must discard and replace. Excessive heat that is produced by fire damage could influence the safety of your stored food.
