In the ideal worlds, edifices can be designed so that flooding can never happen; however, in the real world, water sometimes gets out of control in all edifices. When a water emergency happens, rapid reaction to seepage, spillage, flooding, water damage, or backups has most benefits. Rapid reaction often redeems valuable property from direct water damage as well as destruction from microbial Flood Damage progression.

  1. The longer any type of water damage goes untreated, the more likely the Flood Damage. Important things about water damage to remember during a flood. The Police Department will utilize the Emergency Notification System to notify the residents. During non-business hours, the Police Officers on duty will utilize the afterhours Emergency Notification System; they will proceed to as many buildings and homes as possible to make notifications. During the Flood: Listen to the local radio and television stations or weather alert systems for flood updates. Be aware of entering areas that tend to flood easily, if it is at all possible, DO NOT travel.
  2. If it is necessary to travel DO NOT walk through Flood Damage areas with moving water or drive through flooded areas (as little as 6 inches of moving water could make you fall if you are walking and could cause vehicles to loses control).Evacuate as instructed by emergency personnel (if directed to do so). After the Flood: Avoid flood waters as they may be contaminated with gas, oil and sewage waters. Be aware of Flood Damage areas where floodwaters have receded. Roads may have weakened and could collapse due to water damage Stay away from downed power lines and electrical wires. Do not drive over these lines either. Do not return to flooded areas until emergency personnel indicate it is safe to do so.
  3. Stay out of buildings if flood waters remain around the building or have cause water damage. Be alert and report any hazards and/or water damage. Water Damage: Do not enter wet areas because of the danger of electrocution. If there is any possible Flood Damage danger, evacuate the area. If there is no danger, proceed with caution, but be wary of any other hazards, including: Location of a leak, severity of a leak. Whether or not any valuables are involved or threatened. If you know the source of the water and are fairly confident in your ability to stop it, do so cautiously.
  4. Be prepared to assist, if directed to do so, in protecting your home, family, and personal property that is in jeopardy. Take only those steps that are needed to avoid or reduce immediate water damage, and possible physical harm to others. Certain Flood Damage areas are prone to flash-floods during times of excessive rain or large amounts of ice/snow melt. Certain roads are also prone to low amounts of flooding during heavier rains. Check local weather forecasts, local radar, etc. for details on the weather that may lead to flooding of any level or degree.
