Water Damage >> Storm Damage

Immediate reaction to a Storm Damage emergency redeems time and money, and guards traits and health. The main goals of controlling water damage are well known to professional water damage restorers and public health professionals. These goals are to guard public health, immediately remove harmful chemicals that enter into the milieu with flowing water, restore the milieu to a dry state, and salvage valuable property.

  1. The Storm Damage goals are even more crucial when flood waters contain animal or human body fluids or wastes (e.g., raw sewage) or other organic contaminants. Sewage acts as a largely significant threat to human health. However, the intensity of the health threat depends on the amount of the sewage and the level and scope of penetration into the edifice milieu. All offices shall take precautions to prevent water damage shall water damage enter the space from a pipe break or leak. While top floor and basement areas are more prone to water damage coming from the outside through building leaks, pipe breaks can occur throughout the building from plumbing and fire damage sprinkler systems.
  2. Being diligent about keeping equipment and materials off of the floor will prevent potential loss of those items, and make clean-up if a Storm Damage incursion occurs faster and easier. Do not store boxes, paper, or other porous items on the floor. Raise all of your computers and other electronic components off the floor. Report any signs of leaks to buildings and grounds immediately. After hours, you can still call safedry restoration. Power off your computer at the end of your work day; more serious Storm Damage occurs when the computer is on. (This may save energy too!) Wet places and items shall be dried within 24-48 hours.
  3. Buildings and grounds will respond to all Storm Damage to extract the water and dry out the space. Wet vacuums and extractors are utilized to extract water from the floor and carpet, and dehumidifiers and fans located in the area. In many cases wet surfaces, such as dry wall and carpet, may need to be extracted. Open the windows and keep interior doors open to improve air circulation, if the exterior air is dry (low humidity). Void dehumidifiers when full, leave dehumidifiers on all night. Units shut off when done, so you need not worry about overflow.
  4. Observe wet papers or other porous materials and either: Throw away non-essential papers and other items, remove papers from cases, file cabinets, piles, and spread out to dry, copy wet papers and throw out originals unless keeping originals is required, for large amounts contact safedry to discuss locations for drying, for crucial documents (e.g., library archival material or artwork) contact a professional conservator for suggestions. Assist safedry by emptying file cabinets so they can be relocated to dry carpet or flooring underneath. Remove personal floor rugs or textiles for extraction and cleansing. Remove all Storm Damage materials to be thrown out to the trash area immediately. For large amounts, contact safedry for extraction.
