What is needed to thoroughly extract the adulteration and repair the damage? Shall the entire edifice or a portion of the edifice be evacuated and, if so, for how long? Could semi porous materials be sanitized, or shall they be replaced? What are the costs of using inadequate measures to extract the water damage? What are the signs that help determine when the edifice is safe or not safe for residency? What Water Structural Drying schemes shall be used to test for these signs?

  1. What is the impact of the sewage and water damage on other systems, especially the air changing system (ACS) and the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in this erected milieu? A disinfectant spray (indicated as a bacterial, antibacterial, and fungicidal) that is safe for interior use might be applied to affected surfaces (e.g., floors, walls, furnishings) per builder’s suggestions. Fans shall not be used unless Water Structural Drying area is cleansed and disinfected.
  3. Appropriate PPE including rubber boots, rubber (non-latex) gloves, disposable splash-proof coveralls, splash-proof goggles and masks for eye/nose/mouth splash protection (recommend N95) must be used. Water Structural Drying contractors shall seek information from their own health and safety department regarding appropriate PPE use, training and fit testing. Contain – limit the spread of infected water. Extract infected water. Contact EH&S for details. Disinfect non-porous surfaces and throw away porous items (e.g., carpet and furniture). Consult with EH&S before trying to restore any materials affected by water damage of contaminated water.
  4. Residents shall not be allowed to re-enter the spaces until water damage is solved and water extraction has been completed. If resident requires retrieval of critical item(s), coordinate with supervisor to have response personnel extract and disinfect. Based upon the discretion of the zone manager, recommendations listed might not be necessary for ‘small scale’ clean water extraction, as long as the source of intrusion is solved, water extraction is quickly achieved and occupied areas are entirely dry. Small scale Water Structural Drying is defined as when the water extraction is of relatively small amount, well contained and easily extracted within 24 hours, and building materials do not have to be disturbed or replaced.
