Wind Damage >> Emergency Board Up

Plywood shutters that you create yourself, if placed correctly, could provide a high degree of Emergency Board Up coverage from flying debris during a storm. Plywood shutters could be placed on all kinds of houses. Measure every window and every door that has glass, and add 8 inches to all the height and width to provide a 4-inch overhang on every side of the window or door. Pieces of plywood are generally 48 inches by 96 inches (4 x 8 feet).

  1. Inform your local hardware supply store the dimensions and amount of openings you require to cover the Emergency Board Up to decide how many pieces of plywood to buy. To place plywood shutters, you may require bolts, wood or brick anchors, big washers, and 5/8-inch exterior-grade plywood. For windows 36 × 48 inches or littler placed on a wood framed house, utilize 1/4-inch lag bolts and plastic-coated durable anchors. The lag bolts shall intrude the wall and framed area the window at minimum 1-3/4 inches. For bigger windows, utilize 3/8-inch lag bolts that intrude the wall and framed area the window at minimum 2-1/2 inches. For windows 36 × 48 inches or littler placed on a brick house, utilize 1/4-inch expansion bolts and galvanized durable 2 inch expanding anchors.
  2. The expansion bolt shall intrude the wall at minimum 1-1/2 inches. For bigger windows, utilize 3/8-inch expansion bolts that intrude the wall at minimum 1-1/2 inches. The items you may require are a circular or hand saw, a bore with the accurately dimensioned bits, a mallet, and a spanner to fit the bolts. To be secure, utilize eye coverage and work gloves. Saw the plywood to the measurements for every opening. Bore holes 2-1/2 inches from the outside edge of the plywood at every corner and at 12-inch intervals. Bore four holes in the center area of the plywood to relieve pressure during a strong Emergency Board Up storm.
  3. Place the Emergency Board Up plywood over the opening, and mark every hole position on the outside wall. Bore holes with the appropriate dimensions and type of bit for the anchors. Place the anchors, the plywood, and the bolts to create sure they fit correctly. On wood-framed houses, create sure that the anchors are secured into the solid wood that framed the door or window and not into the siding or trim. Mark every shutter so you may know where it is to be placed, and store the shutters and the bolts in an accessible place.
  4. If the opening is bigger than one sheet of plywood, you may require you to create shutters with 24 × 48 bracing. This bracing could be two 24 × 48s at the middle and bottom of the two pieces of plywood, evenly spaced, with the 2-inch side attached to the inside of the Emergency Board Up storm shutter. Attach the 24 × 48s to the outside of the Emergency Board Up storm shutter with 2-inch, 10-gauge wood screws before placing the shutter. Impact-resistant windows are optimal for windows not easily fitted with hurricane shutters or those that are hard to reach.
