Even if you had taken effort to cover your house from flooding, you may still require Flood Damage insurance if you reside in a floodplain. Homeowner’s policies might not cover wind damage, so you will probably be required to buy another policy from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). It could take 30 days for a flood insurance policy to be effective. This is why you may be required to buy flood insurance prior to flooding.

  1. If your insurance agent cannot write a Flood Damage policy. Ask the emergency managers agency or American Red Cross office for data about the wind damage hazards in the area. Are your roof shingles properly placed? In a windstorm, wind damage is carried from the top down to the outside walls, down to the base. Houses can be damaged when wind damage is not properly sent to the ground. Roof shingles (the planks and plywood attach to the roof rafters or trusses) can break during a hurricane if not adequately placed. Check the shingles from inside the attic. If some of the fasteners had missed the rafters, you might require to get reattached to the sheathing.
  2. If you are putting a new roof on, be certain that the shingles meet the current recommended practices. Tornadoes form from severe thunderstorms in hot, humid, unstable air along and ahead of cold fronts. Such thunderstorms also might create large hail and wind damage. When intense springtime Flood Damage storm systems create large, persistent zones that support tornado development, major outbreaks could happen.
