Wind Damage >> Flood Damage

Even if you had taken effort to cover your house from flooding, you may still require Flood Damage insurance if you reside in a floodplain. Homeowner’s policies might not cover wind damage, so you will probably be required to buy another policy from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). It could take 30 days for a flood insurance policy to be effective. This is why you may be required to buy flood insurance prior to flooding.

  1. If your insurance agent cannot write a Flood Damage policy. Ask the emergency managers agency or American Red Cross office for data about the wind damage hazards in the area. Are your roof shingles properly placed? In a windstorm, wind damage is carried from the top down to the outside walls, down to the base. Houses can be damaged when wind damage is not properly sent to the ground. Roof shingles (the planks and plywood attach to the roof rafters or trusses) can break during a hurricane if not adequately placed. Check the shingles from inside the attic. If some of the fasteners had missed the rafters, you might require to get reattached to the sheathing.
  2. If you are putting a new roof on, be certain that the shingles meet the current recommended practices. After a hurricane or large Flood Damage storm hits, it’s too late to cover your house and things. But there are things you could do presently to limit| wind damage in the future. Some are slightly easy and cheap; others may require a contractor. You will require consideration of the characteristics of the house, the monetary resources and the building laws in your area. This homeowner’s checklist may help you learn what you could do. For additional Flood Damage data about the costs and benefits of certain approaches, communicate with a professional constructor, architect or contractor. One shall also ask your building office about building allowance laws.
  3. In a hurricane or major Flood Damage storm, the outside walls of the roof (end gables) take a real beating from wind damage and could fall in. Gable braces often consist of 2”x4”s placed in an “X” formation at both ends of the attic: from the top middle of the end gable to the base of the braces of the fourth truss, and from the base middle of the last gable to the peak of the roof. During the late spring, tornado producing thunderstorms could form in the southern High Plains along a "dry line," the interface between warm, moist air to the east and hot, dry air to the west.
  4. From the front range of the Rocky Mountains southward toward the Texas Panhandle, slope flow of unstable air could cause tornado producing thunderstorms to form. Tornadoes form from severe thunderstorms in hot, humid, unstable air along and ahead of cold fronts. Such thunderstorms also might create large hail and wind damage. When intense springtime Flood Damage storm systems create large, persistent zones that support tornado development, major outbreaks could happen.
