Lead abatement is an activity designed to permanently eliminate lead-based paint hazards. Abatement is often ordered by a state or local government, and can involve specialized techniques not typical of renovation activities. EPA requires individuals and firms who perform abatement projects in pre-1978 target housing and child-occupied facilities to be certified and Lead Abatement State Programs follow specific work practices. 

To become certified, individuals must be trained by an accredited training provider, apply to EPA, and possibly take a proficiency exam (depending on job category). Firms must apply to EPA. Both individual and firm certification is required. Why should you have your home inspected and Lead Abatement State Programs evaluated for lead hazards and risks? Why should you hire a certified contractor to perform lead-based paint activities? If your state or tribe is authorized by EPA to operate the lead-based paint certification and training program in lieu of the federal program, the state or tribal program may have different titles for lead-based paint professionals and the types of testing they can perform.
