Basement Drying >> Storm Damage

Storm damage is kind of a generic term, there are many kinds of storms that could fall under that category. The results of a tornado, an area that was in the path of a hurricane or just a heavy thunderstorm. In the United States alone there are over 100,000 thunderstorms a year and there are on the average 1200 tornadoes annually. Considering there are thousands of basement, annually there'll be some that sustain some sort of Storm Damage.

  1. Insurance companies are called out on claims of Storm Damage every year, some of these claims are because the wooden frame of the house has been completely destroyed. Other times the claim may be much smaller perhaps there has been a minor flood leaving the fair amount of water in the basement area of a person's house. Also every year there will be a flood in one part of the country or another, these floods can be the result of too much snow melting at one time, heavy rains from a thunderstorm, a tornado or a flash flood.
  2. In hurricane Katrina, one of the most destructive and deadliest hurricanes in history, killing over 1800 people and causing over $80 billion worth of damage. This hurricane destroyed thousands of houses and caused Storm Damage to thousands more. The damage was so significant that it took months and even years to put people's lives back in order. Hurricane Sandy was the second costliest storm in United States history, with the estimated damage coming in at $75 billion, the storm also took the lives of 285 people and actually covered seven different countries.
  3. The amount of tornadoes every year seems to grow a little bit, but compared to the 1950s when there were only approximately 200 tornadoes a year. The number certainly has grown exponentially to where we’re at now averaging 1000 more annually. Some of this is due to much more sophisticated radar and tracking devices. It could be that we actually had more tornadoes in the 50s and 60s but we just didn't know about them. But the Midwest definitely has the majority of tornadoes, along with the most insurance claims for Storm Damage.
  4. If you live along the river or stream, especially in the area that has flooded before it would probably be a good idea to take out a flood insurance policy. The rates are usually pretty low and considering how much you would have to lose it could be well worth it. One claim for a Storm Damage could end up costing thousands of dollars, easily paying for years and years of flood damage insurance. It doesn't take much water damage to add up to a whole lot of money, especially with the cost of building materials always on the rise. And the cost of the wages of highly skilled construction workers, it wouldn't take much of a Storm Damage to be a big burden financially.
