STORM, FLOOD, AND HURRICANE RESPONSE Guidance on Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing for Flood Cleanup Workers The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) provides the following guidelines and warnings to flood cleanup workers. The hazards in flood waters are likely variable and can include sewage, household chemicals and cleaning solutions, petroleum products, hazardous industrial chemicals, pesticides, Roof Leak Sealer and flammable liquids. 

Workers must also be aware of dangers from physical hazards such as obstacles covered by flood waters (storm debris, depressions, drainage openings, ground erosion) and from displaced reptiles or Roof Leak Sealer other animals.Workers and volunteers involved with flood cleanup should avoid direct skin contact with flood waters if possible and through the use of appropriate PPE and clothing. 

In most instances, the selection of PPE will be dependent on site specific conditions, hazards, Roof Leak Sealer and tasks; the list below provides guidance on PPE and clothing for flood response workers:Electrically insulated, watertight boots with steel shank, toe, and insole. Tennis shoes or sneakers should not be worn because they will transfer contamination and will not prevent punctures, bites, or crush injuries. 

Hip waders may be appropriate to help prevent contact with flood waters; Heavy, waterproof, Roof Leak Sealer cut-resistant work gloves. Other types of protective gloves may be required if handling identified material hazards; Goggles, safety glasses with side shields or full face shields. Sun/glare-protective lenses may be needed in some work settings; Soft hat or other protective head cover. 

Wear an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) rated hardhat if there is any danger of falling debris or electrical hazards;Hearing protection (when working in an environment with any noise that you must shout over to be heard); Comfortable, Roof Leak Sealer form fitting, light weight clothing including long pants and a long sleeved shirt or coveralls.

Under some work conditions, Roof Leak Sealer NIOSH approved respirators may be necessary (e.g., for exposures to mold-contaminated materials/environments, or other recognized chemical, physical, or biological hazards).Additional PPE, respiratory protection, or clothing may be required when specific exposure hazards are identified or expected at the work site. 

In some instances, the protective ensemble components (garment, boots and gloves) may need to be impervious to contaminated flood Roof Leak Sealer or other site-specific chemical, physical, or biological hazards. Waders should be cleaned with soap and water and air dried between uses. In all instances, workers are advised to wash their hands with soap and clean water, especially before eating or drinking. 

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can be used if soap and water are not available. Protect any cuts Roof Leak Sealer or abrasions with waterproof gloves and dressings. The use of insect repellant, sun block and lip balm may also be required for some work environments. Drink plenty of bottled water and take frequent rest breaks to avoid overexertion. 

Other concerns when flood levels rise above the lowest floor are mold and biological/chemical contamination. These may render an otherwise repairable building unrepairable, Roof Leak Sealer or will at least make the cleanup, restoration, and repairs much more expensive and time-consuming. [end of caption] In flood Zones V and A, use a DFE that results in freeboard (elevate the lowest floor above the BFE) (see Figure 7).Figure 7 caption. 

Recommended construction in Coastal A Zones and V Zones. [end of caption] In flood Zones V and A, calculate design loads and conditions (hydrostatic loads, hydrodynamic loads, Roof Leak Sealer wave loads, floating debris loads, and erosion and scour) under the assumption that the flood level will exceed the BFE. In an A Zone subject to waves and erosion (i.e., a Coastal A Zone), use a pile or column foundation (see Figure 7). 

Outside the SFHA (in flood Zones B, C, and X), adopt flood-resistant design and construction practices if historical evidence Roof Leak Sealer or a review of the available flood data shows the building could be damaged by a flood more severe than the base flood (see Figure 8).Figure 8 caption. Design and construct buildings using the latest model building code, ASCE 7-05 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures and ASCE 24-05 Standard for Flood Resistant Design and Construction. Follow the recommendations in FEMA 499, Roof Leak Sealer Home Builder's Guide to Coastal Construction Technical Fact Sheets Series (available at http://www.fema.gov/rebuild/mat/mat_fema499.shtm). 

Use the pre-engineered foundations shown in FEMA 550, Recommended Residential Construction for the Gulf Coast: Building on Strong and Safe Foundations). Use strong connections between the foundation and the elevated building to prevent the building from floating Roof Leak Sealer or washing off the foundation, in the event that flood levels do rise above the lowest floor. 

Use flood damage resistant building materials and methods above the lowest floor. For example, consider using drainable, dryable interior wall assemblies (see Figure 9). This allows interior walls to be opened up and dried after a flood above the lowest floor, Roof Leak Sealer minimizing damage to the structure. For cavity and mass wall assemblies, the methods and materials in Figures 10 and 11 are recommended. Figure 9 caption. 

Recommended wet floodproofing techniques for interior wall construction. The following flood damage resistant materials and methods will prevent wicking and limit flood damage: 1) construct walls with horizontal gaps in wallboard; 2) use non-paper-faced gypsum wallboard below gap, Roof Leak Sealer painted with latex paint; 3) use rigid, closed-cell insulation in lower portion of walls.

Use water-resistant flooring with waterproof adhesive; and 5) use pressure treated wood framing (Source: LSU AgCenter Roof Leak Sealer and Coastal Contractor Magazine). Use brick veneer or fiber-cement siding, with non-paper-faced gypsum sheathing (vinyl siding is also flood-resistant but is less resistant to wind damage); 2) provide cavity for drainage; 3) use rigid, Roof Leak Sealer closed-cell insulation; 4) use steel or pressure treated wood studs and framing; and 5) use non-paper-faced gypsum wallboard painted with latex paint (Source: Coastal Contractor Magazine and Building Science Corporation).

Recommended flood-resistant exterior mass wall construction. The following materials and methods will limit flood damage to exterior mass walls: 1) use concrete masonry with stucco or brick veneer (provide drainage cavity if brick veneer is used); 2) use rigid, Roof Leak Sealer closed-cell insulation; 3) use steel framing; and 4) use non-paper-faced gypsum wallboard painted with latex paint (Source: Coastal Contractor Magazine and Building Science Corporation).
