Basement Drying >> Basement Flood

When there is a flood the ground becomes completely saturated and the water has nowhere to go and winds up in your basement. Until the floodwaters recede there is little you can do, make sure the electricity is shut off and do not enter the basement. After the water level has gone down you can then begin the Basement Flood. The key is to perform the water extraction safely, above everything else you do not want anything else to go wrong.

  1. Of course, your number one piece of equipment is going to be your pump. There are some pumps that can move the massive amounts of water in a short period of time. Some can handle 60 gallons a minute and more. You might not think that there is that much water in your basement but you will be surprised. A standard size swimming pool will hold approximately 30,000 gallons, how big is your basement? You some care pumping the water from your Basement Flood, if the soil around the outside perimeter of your house is still very saturated, the weight of the water could make your walls collapse.
  2. Once the water in your basement has been mostly pumped out, there will still be some water but the pump can't get and will need to be vacuumed out. If you don't own a vacuum, I suggest you get a big shop VAC that has a pump and extra lengths of hose. Put the vacuum outside, run the hose down the stairs, vacuum the water up and it will pump outside. For the next step of your Basement Flood you will need at least a couple of dehumidifiers and several high velocity air movers the ones you see water restoration company's use.
  3. Remove any material that has become water damaged like drywall and carpeting, anything that is retaining water. You must remove everything that was affected by the flood out of the basement, take these things outside and assess whether they can be salvaged or they need to be thrown away. Running the fans and dehumidifiers still may take at least a day or two depending how wet the Basement Flood and how wet the basement walls were.
  4. After all the water has been removed and there is no moisture left in the Basement Flood. The floors and walls need to be sanitized by scrubbing with a solution consisting of one cup of household bleach to every 5 gallons of water. Make sure that you wear old work clothes that it wouldn't matter if bleach got on them, some rubber boots and heavy rubber gloves. After the mopping and scrubbing is complete you want to run your dehumidifier and fans for least another day making sure that all dampness is gone. Bacteria could still grow if there's any moisture left in a dark damp basement. You do not want to have to repeat the process of a Basement Flood, after you thought that your basement was safe.
