DEALING WITH WATER DAMAGE When should clean up begin? Clean up should begin as soon as it is safe to return to the building. Prompt and proper clean up is important for your health. Flood waters can contain microorganisms (such as bacteria, molds, and viruses), raw sewage, dead animals, Contaminated Sewage Water and other debris. 

It is importantto remove such debris and/or contaminated materials from your home quickly.If materials are not cleaned properly Contaminated Sewage Water or discarded promptly, poor air quality can result.Microorganisms can contaminate indoor air and cause respiratory problems and allergies.They can continue to damage building materials long after the flood waters recede.

How can homeowners avoid problems?Remove water:Pump, sweep, or drain water from the building. Remove tree branches, garbage, mud Contaminated Sewage Water and other debris. It is a good idea to remove furniture, carpets and other household items that were wet or damaged by the floodwaters. Wet and contaminated materials contain microorganisms that contaminate indoor air. 

Patch or fix leaky roofs, broken windows, Contaminated Sewage Water and other places to prevent leaks.Completely dry out your house/building:The drying process is extremely important because most microorganisms survive in moist environments. Thoroughly dry the building during the first 24 to 48 hours after the waterenters the structure. 

Use fans if it is safe to use electricity. Open windows to increase air circulation, ventilation and drying. Use dehumidifiers with windows and doors closed.It may be necessary to remove portions of walls, Contaminated Sewage Water ceilings, and floors to completely dry outthe house.

Dry any and all wet materials as soon as possible.Remove and dispose of mold-contaminated materials that can't be cleaned especially porous materials that may have absorbed moisture: Contaminated Sewage Water wallboard, insulation, plaster, carpet/carpet pad, ceiling tiles, wood and paper products.

Anything that is clean and dry, and does not smell musty or earthy or appear to have water damage can be salvaged.Carefully inspect anything that is porous: Contaminated Sewage Water e.g. fabric, padded furniture, books and papers. These items may have been affected with mold or mildew from high humidity even if they were not in direct contact with flood waters.

Fabric may be washed with detergent and hot water. If washing removes the sight and smell of mold, the fabric item is safe to keep.Non-porous items made of wood, Contaminated Sewage Water steel, plastic, ceramic, glass or concrete can be cleaned with detergent and water, or a weak bleach solution of no more than 1 cup bleach to 1 gallon water.

If other special cleaning products are used during the cleanup, carefully read and follow directions. Never mix bleach with ammonia Contaminated Sewage Water or any other household cleaner.Make sure you have good ventilation during cleanup.

If you see large amounts of mold growth on porous surfaces, consider hiring a professional to remove the material.If you develop chest pain, shortness of breath or other respiratory symptoms, Contaminated Sewage Water seek immediate medical attention.
