Steps to Responding to a Water Emergency The Water Department is dedicated to providing San Diego with a safe and reliable water supply. While the Water Operations Division and Capital Improvements Program help to maintain and improve our water system, Flood Water Backing Up unexpected water emergencies still occur. 

A water emergency is water flowingfrom the ground or a pipe causing flooding,soil erosion, pavement Flood Water Backing Up or structure damage.This reference guide provides informationyou can use when a water emergency occursin your neighborhood.Thank you for your cooperation and patiencewhile the crews are responding to wateremergencies and reported water leaks. 

Tips for clearing debris from your waterafter repairs are made:Run your faucets for a couple of minutes in orderto release air Flood Water Backing Up and remove debris from the system. Use bathtub, laundry faucets, and hose bibs whenpossible for flushing your system as they generallyhave a larger capacity and do not have aeratorscreens to trap debris.

Clean aerators (faucet screens) to remove debristhat might clog the water fixture. The hotline operator takes down information including:name, phone number, location, nearby landmarks, description of emergency, damages, Flood Water Backing Up and then dispatches anemergency service unit.2. 

Emergency Service Unit investigates the problem, protects the public’s safety, and shuts down the water toisolate the emergency. San Diego Police Dept., Utility Markout, Engineering Section, and Environmental Assessment evaluateand prepare the site for repair. Traffi c control is set-up. An environmental assessment is conducted and stormwater protection measures are installed.5. Media may interview a Water Department spokesperson to inform the public of the progress of repairs and Flood Water Backing Up impacts to the neighborhood surrounding the main break, or other water emergency.

6. Water Quality Laboratory, Risk Management Department, Street Division are all part of the recoveryprocess. Pipes are fl ushed. Water quality is tested and when safe, the system is recharged. The Street Division paves over the excavated area. To help prevent small leaks from becoming big problems and to reduce water loss in the system, we need your help. A. Consistent flow of water - it may be a water leak.B. Intermittent - it may be due to some nearby irrigation runoff or Flood Water Backing Up a construction project. Check around the neighborhood. Locate your water meter outside of your property. Your water meter is located in a water meter box. The box is covered with a removable lid.

If possible, remove the box lid with a large screwdriver. Please exercise caution asyou do so.If there is standing water inside the box, Flood Water Backing Up you may bail out the water to view the meter.Which side of the water meter is the leak coming from?A. Property side - it is your responsibility to repair the leak. You may hire a certified plumber.

(The Water Department maintains the property side gasket/washer only).B. Water Department side - a City crew will come out to repair the leak.You will not be charged for water leaking on the City side.When you’ve completed investigating leaks at the meter, Flood Water Backing Up please be sure to put the lid· back on the meter box. 

Never turn power on or off yourself or use an electric tool or appliance while standing in water. Do not turn the power back on until electrical equipment has been inspected by a qualified electrician. All electrical equipment and Flood Water Backing Up appliances must be completely dry before returning them to service. Have a certified electrician check these items if there is any question.· 

If you see frayed wiring or sparks when you restore power, or if there is an odor of something burning but no visible fire, Flood Water Backing Up you should immediately shut off the electrical system at the main circuit breaker.· Consult your utility company about using electrical equipment, including power generators. 

Do not connect generators to your home's electrical circuits without the approved, automatic-interrupt devices. If a generator is on line when electrical service is restored, Flood Water Backing Up it can become a major fire hazard and it may endanger line workers helping to restore power in your area.If you believe someone has been electrocuted take the following steps:  

Look first. Don't touch. The person may still be in contact with the electrical source. Touching the person may pass the current through you.2. Call or have someone else call 911 or Flood Water Backing Up emergency medical help. 3. Turn off the source of electricity if possible. 

If not, move the source away from you and the affected person using a nonconducting object made of cardboard, plastic or wood.4. Once the person is free of the source of electricity, check the person's breathing and pulse. If either has stopped or Flood Water Backing Up seems dangerously slow or shallow, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately.

5. If the person is faint or pale or shows other signs of shock, lay him or her down with the head slightly lower than the trunk of the body and the legs elevated. 6. Don't touch burns, break blisters, Flood Water Backing Up or remove burned clothing. Electrical shock may cause burns inside the body, so be sure the person is taken to a doctor.
