Hoarding >> Compulsive Animal Hoarding

Compulsive hoarding isn't anything new, as matter of fact, hoarding has existed as long as there were people and there were things to be collected. But until recently, when these television shows started to bring this disease to light and let the world learn more about Compulsive Animal Hoarding. Also there are shows that depict people with the uncontrollable desire to collect animals, but unfortunately the living conditions for these animals are less than desirable.

  1. There are people that will keep extremely large numbers of cats or dogs or other animals penned up in small confinement. In most cases, this becomes too overwhelming for the people to provide adequate care, including the basic needs such as water, food and clean living areas. If the authorities find out about these conditions they will most certainly view it as a form of cruelty to animals. They will get a court order and force the homeowner to Compulsive Animal Hoarding, and the animals will be removed.
  2. Most people, either have never seen these shows or maybe they don't believe that they’re real, so the prevention of Compulsive Animal Hoarding must begin with educating our communities so they can identify the signs of an Compulsive Animal Hoarding. Most times it's not difficult for a person to realize what a person's property is being used to collect animals, there is usually a strong urine and fecal odor. The condition of their personal possessions are usually not kept in the best of order and are often thrown around.
  3. You can usually hear the barking of several dogs or the multitude of stray cats coming to and from the home or other buildings. Also observe a property that you suspect might be used as a Compulsive Animal Hoarding, the homeowners usually tend to keep to themselves only leaving their property in search of more animals. They also usually collect other items like refuse and other clutter left in and around the house. Most times the animal hoarding home has a fence around it making it difficult to see what's going on the other side. If you know these people and you suspect that they have a problem, you ask them if they think that they're keeping too many animals often they will deny this.
  4. The Compulsive Animal Hoarding often times they do not realize that they are doing anything wrong, that they are keeping an unsanitary living condition in their home and they do not understand how this could affect their neighbors. From the standpoint of a local animal shelter, taking in a large number of animals creates a tremendous strain, considering they may not have enough spaces to provide care for these animals. Of course the best prevention is to make sure that the number of unwanted animals does not get out of control, to make sure that if you do not intend to breed these animals have them spayed or neutered. This will help to keep down the number of Compulsive Animal Hoarding cases.
