Animal Damage >> Animals digging in my yard

When it's obvious that your lawn has sustained some kind of animal damage whether it's creating mounds, tunneling or just plain digging. In order to correct the problem first you must identify the kind of animal that is created it. Depending on which part of the country you live in might at least give you a very good place to start. This may be more of a process of elimination, narrowing down which animals are more likely not to cause animal damage.

  1. Sporting goods stores sell expensive infrared cameras that you could set up and take home movies of what's happening in your yard in the middle of the night. But, if you just take some notes, kind of a journal or log, a person could narrow down the time of day that the animal damage is occurring. Some animals like raccoons, badgers, and armadillos do their digging at night, they're nocturnal, meaning they sleep in the daytime and hunt in the night. What kind of holes are these? The holes that skunks dig are usually small when they're looking for insects to eat. And raccoons will shred grass and tear up little patches of grass as they're looking for grubs that live just under the layer of sod.
  2. Pocket gophers are one of the main staples of the badger, badgers will do some extensive animal damage, digging, looking for gophers. But pocket gophers usually have a very distinct labyrinth of tunnels that makes it very apparent of their existence. So if you have pocket gophers then it’s very likely that a badger could be the culprit. In the southeastern part of the United States is where armadillos thrive looking for spiders and insects they'll dig holes 5 inches wide and usually 3 inches deep tearing up flowers and other plants that get in their way.
  3. The animal damage you see may not be digging up your garden at all, they may be tunneling through it, storing something in it, or just merely building a nest. Moles are notorious for just blindly tunneling along, creating raised furrows as they work their way across your lawn. Pocket gophers build tubes out of dirt just above the surface of the ground. Their handiwork is usually discovered shortly after the snow melts and the spring thaws.
  4. To prevent any further animal damage will depend on what kind of animal and the control it will take in the area in which you live. A fence might keep some animals out, but for the ones that tunnel it will be of little use. Setting traps might work but check with local ordinances about the legality issues. Eliminating where some of these animals get their food is not only creative but it's a win-win situation. For example, raccoons that are looking for grubs in your yard will not be returning if there are no grubs to be had.
