Odor Control >> Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals

There was a mother and a baby skunk that was in my basement window well. I removed and exterminated the baby. I removed the mother although I was unable to exterminate it. I cleaned the window well from the smell. The skunk sprayed prior to getting it out of there. Two days Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals later the mother was again in the window well. I exterminated it with a bomb from the hardware store. I removed the carcass and have cleaned up the area although the smell is still there. I have removed the dirt from the area in the window well and the remainder of the litter of skunks might still be around.
The neighbor found them and run them out of his area. I have not seen the skunks although the smell is still in the house and I thought by now it would have gone away. What is the solution to this problem? I have seen a solution to mix up that has peroxide and baking soda. By Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals pouring this into the dirt around the window well will this make the smell go away? Please respond. Thank you.Replies:I am very upset with the idea that you destroyed these animals. This was not necessary. Most plant and feed supply stores carry an inexpensive mixture to deter skunks and other animals, and without causing the animals to spray.
The problem is the odor is an oil and does not dissolve in water. You may have to treat the area with a scrubbing of strong soap. There may be commercial products. Check a hardware store for information.Steve SampleLouis,I recently discovered the actual recipe and its Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals reference. The old fashioned tomato juice routine has nothing going for it other than folklore; it has no efficacy as far as chemistry goes. The formula below does. The peroxide oxidizes the odorant to materials that can react with the weak base NaHCO3 to form water- soluble products that are more easily removed with the detergent and rinse.
Skunk deodorizing pets: (Chemical and Engineering News October 18, 1993, page 90)1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide1/4 cup of baking Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals soda (NaHCO3)1 teaspoon of liquid detergent.Follow bath with a tap water rinse.Regards,ProfHoff 878Louis-The usual problem with skunk-order is removing it from a living body, without harm.Dirt, you can hit a little harder. If you want to. The peroxide and baking soda may help. I might spray some oven cleaner over it. Or a sprinkling of lye. I wouldn't put those on anybody's skin! or any animal.
The peroxide will decay in dirt, faster than the smell. So save some and do it again later. A light sprinkling of bleach might work better. Dirt also has the advantage of housing a variety of micro-organisms and Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals chemicals which should eventually degrade the skunk odor chemical. This is the fastest thing you can do, and environmentally benign: I'd try covering it with a 20-lb bag of cheap kitty litter. Kitty litter absorbs "sticky gasses" like this because it has a high surface area from many tiny pores in the grains. Immediately after covering in kitty litter, the well can't be a strong source of the smell. It might be a weak source for some time.
A layer of plastic sheeting or aluminum foil over the litter, to try to seal the smell into the ground, with maybe another layer of kitty litter over it, should make a tomb good enough that you can't smell Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals anything when right on top of it, except for stink adhering to your walls and surrounding dirt. It's not clear for me, from your letter, where the in your house smell is coming from. Finding out where it's coming from, then deciding what will get rid of it, are two separate problems. For that we charge extra ;-)where it comes from:A) It sounds like the smell should be a bunch of leftover stink-oil soaked into the materials around your window well.B)
You might be implying that you think the baby skunks might be coming back when you're not looking. If so they won't spray more unless someone scares them while they are there.C) Some of the odor Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals that leaks in thru the window will settle on surfaces in the room as it travels. After all, the stink chemical is a liquid that can evaporate, not a pure gas. (I believe it's a "Mercaptan" like C2H5-SH. -SH's are stinky.) It can "un-evaporate" too, making surfaces invisibly "damp" with it. So it can take plenty of deliberate ventilation to make it leave. One path for air to go in, another for air to go out, neither of them being that window that was the original source of the smell. For the room inside, I'd try to buy or borrow an ionizer-type air cleaner.
The Sharper Image ones probably destroy whatever stink odor goes thru them at a decent rate. Others probably work too. Heating the room with a 1500W electric heater may help the smell evaporate off surfaces faster, when fresh air goes by. Warm up the room an extra 10 degrees F or so, then open the windows enough to get a little cooler, with the heater still running. Running fans thru the room also helps smells move Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals out faster. You should make sure that window seals well, doesn't leak air, till the smell is really gone outside.of the most common concerns about skunks is dealingwith the odor.
Pets are commonly sprayed and come homecovered in musk. Skunk scent is persistent and difficult toremove. Washing people, pets, or clothing with vinegar ortomato juice may eliminate most of the odor. A solution ofhydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and liquid soap (see recipebelow) may also be effective when used to wash downwalls, pets, or clothing. Do not add water to the solution.Clothing may be soaked in a weak solution of householdchloride bleach or ammonia. Remember not to Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals mix chlorine bleach with ammonia. Neutroleum alpha is a scentmasking solution that can be applied to the sprayed area toreduce the odor. It is available through some commercialcleaning suppliers.
Walls or structural areas that have beensprayed by skunks can be washed down with vinegar ortomato juice solutions or sprayed with neutroleum alpha.Use ventilation fans to speed up the process of odor Get A Skunk Smell Out Of Skin And Animals dissipation. Scented candles can help mask odors if theodors are not too strong. When musk enters the eyes, severe burning and an excessive tear flow may occur.
