EPA's Assessment of Risks from Radon in Homes In 2003 the Agency updated the estimates of lung cancer risks from indoor radon based on the National Academy of Sciences' (NAS) latest report on radon, the Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation (BEIR) VI Report(1999). EPA worked Clear Your House Of Radon closely with the Science Advisory Board (SAB).

An independent panel of scientific experts, to determine how best to apply the risk models developed by the BEIR VI committee. The SAB's advice and recommendations were incorporated modifying and extending the methods Clear Your House Of Radon and approaches used in BEIR VI to construct a single model yielding results midway between the results obtained using the two models preferred by the BEIR VI committee.

The Agency's updated calculation of a best estimate of annual lung cancer deaths from radon is about 21,000 (with an uncertainty range of 8,000 to 45,000), which is consistent with the estimates of the BEIR VI Report. A single risk model also permitted the Agency to calculate a numerical estimate of the risk per unit exposure [lung cancer deaths per working level month (WLM)] which will be used to update estimated lung cancer risks from radon in various publications, Clear Your House Of Radon including A Citizen's Guide to Radon.

The following is an Clear Your House Of Radon updated chart of the lifetime risk of lung cancer death per person from radon exposure in homes (excerpted from the updated radon risk assessment).

Radon Level a Lifetime Risk of Lung Cancer Death (per person) from Radon Exposure in Homes bpCi/L Never Smokers Current Smokers General Population Assumes constant lifetime exposure in homes at these levels. Estimates are subject to Clear Your House Of Radon uncertainties as discussed in Chapter VIII of the risk assessment.

Note: BEIR VI did not specify excess relative risks for current smokers. Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation (BEIR) VI Report: "The Health Effects of Exposure to Indoor Radon" The National Research Council published the report, Clear Your House Of Radon entitled: "Health Effects of Exposure to Radon: BEIR VI, Committee on Health Risks of Exposure to Radon (BEIR VI)".

This report by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is the most definitive accumulation of scientific Clear Your House Of Radon data on indoor radon. The report confirms that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and that it is a serious public health problem. The study fully supports EPA estimates that radon causes about 15,000 lung cancer deaths per year.

Successful school IAQ management programs are works in progress, Clear Your House Of Radon and most districts put the components of success in place over time. The "Framework for Effective School IAQ Management: Key Drivers" is a system enhanced by continuous reinforcement. Implementation of one Key Driver will support and contribute to the development of another.

Strategies that support the Key Drivers complement this positive feedback loop. Overall program efficiency increases as school districts incorporate each Key Driver into their programs. This document describes how the "Framework for Effective School IAQ Management: Key Drivers" displayed in the graphic on the right can help Clear Your House Of Radon schools address radon risks as part of a comprehensive IAQ management process.

EPA Acknowledgement of Non-Federal National Radon Proficiency Programs After the close of EPA's National Radon Proficiency Program (RPP) in 1998, Clear Your House Of Radon there were requests that EPA offer some form of recognition of non-Federal radon proficiency programs.

EPA developed recognition criteria and Clear Your House Of Radon offered a one-time acknowledgment to both of the existing non-Federal national radon proficiency programs (The National Radon Safety Board (NRSB) and The National Environmental Health Association's (NEHA) National Radon Proficiency Program). This official acknowledgement [dated March 30, 2001] ran through December 31, 2002, at which time, EPA's determination expired.

There were no extensions of this determination. To avoid misleading the public, the recognized programs were not to make reference to this EPA determination after December 31, 2002. EPA continues to encourage States, industry and Clear Your House Of Radon consumers to work together to identify those elements that would improve non-Federal radon proficiency programs and go beyond EPA's former voluntary RPP. These improved elements should then be adopted as standards of practice.
