People are always interested in, just what exactly police officers do when they arrive at a crime scene. The following is a step-by-step guideline that all law enforcement officers use. The officers who arrive at a Hazmat Cleanup must be very cautious and methodical. They need to strive to preserve the scene with minimal contamination and must not disturb of the physical evidence.

  1. First the responding officer(s) should always note or log in the dispatch information, like the physical address/location, the exact time, date, the type of call it is and the parties involved. The officer's must be aware of any people and/or vehicles in or leaving the Hazmat Cleanup. They will need to approach the crime scene with extreme caution, look over the entire area, and take note of any possible secondary crime scenes. The police officers will take initial observations, using their different senses, they will look, listen, and even smell to make an assessment of the scene and ensure complete officer safety before going in.
  2. They must remain alert and attentive at all times and treat the vicinity as a Hazmat Cleanup until it has been determined to be otherwise. Police officers must identify any hazardous situations or people to keep themselves and other people out of harm. The responding police officer(s) need to ensure that there aren't any immediate threats to the other responders. They will scan the area for every sight, sound and smell that could present a danger, like any hazardous materials such as gasoline. If the incident involves a clandestine drug lab, lab, biological weapons, radiological or other chemical threats the police officer must contact the appropriate personnel/agencies before entering the Hazmat Cleanup.
  3. The police officers must approach the crime scene in a way that maximizes the safety of the victims, witnesses, other officers and anyone else in the area. They will survey the crime scene for dangerous persons and take control of the situation. It will constantly notify all supervisory personnel and call for assistance/backup when needed. Police officers also should make sure that medical attention will be provided to any injured people, and minimize the contamination of the Hazmat Cleanup. The responding officer(s) should assess the victim(s) for signs of life and their medical needs and also provide any immediate medical attention.
  4. The police officer will call for the appropriate medical personnel. They will guide the medical technicians to the victim to lessen any contamination or alteration of the crime scene. The officers will point out any potential physical evidence to the medical personnel, and will instruct them to lessen any contact with such evidence, to make sure that medical technicians preserve all clothing and personal belongings without cutting through bullet holes or knife tears. They will need to document movement of persons or any items by medical technicians. They must instruct all medical technicians not to clean up the Hazmat Cleanup and to avoid moving or altering any items originating from the crime scene.
