Animal Damage >> Tunneling animals

You want to have the nicest lawn in the neighborhood, you want people to think that Arnold Palmer lives here. The last thing you want is some kind of animal damage, some animal rooting around in your garden or tearing up your grass. You think,” how can I stop this”, but first you should think what kind of animal might this be? Are they some kind of a rodent or maybe something bigger, a badger, a raccoon, a honey badger or Godzilla?

  1. So the first challenge is to identify the pest that is causing the animal damage in your yard and garden. Most of the time it's easier to identify the damage certain animals have certain characteristics, like moles for example. If the rodent family moles are about medium-size, they're black or gray, with very small, weak eyes and large front claws that are kind of turned sideways specifically for digging. They feed on things that live in your grass like ants, grubs, beetles and earthworms. They're very fast diggers, tunneling at a rate of about 15 feet per hour. Destroying any plant roots that get in the way, moles will dig their tunnels just under the surface of the ground creating mounds as they dig
  2. Voles are a little smaller, look more like a mouse, and they like to move into the tunnels that are abandoned by the moles. They have gray or brown fur, are smaller than moles, they’re about 3 to 5 inches long. Voles are herbivores that eat plants roots, flower bulbs and stems. It might be easier to spot a vole because they will spend a little more time out of their tunnel running above ground. Because voles feast on plants they can be more destructive to gardens and other plants, they cause more animal damage than probably any other rodent.
  3. When gophers or pocket gophers move into an area, they can cause considerable amount of animal damage, tearing up lawns, gardens and field crops. Gophers also burrow, create a maze of crescent shaped mounds as they dig their underground tunnels. Gopher and mole mounds look somewhat similar, but there are distinct differences. The tunnels that moles create are more at the surface and or more circular. Gophers are active in creating animal damage year-round.
  4. Ground squirrels is another burrowing type of rodent that dig long, winding tunnels. Often confused with chipmunks, they have some of the markings and colors of their rodent cousins. Ground squirrels often to live in colonies, sometimes in massive sized mazes, sharing the same tunnels. If these tunnels are left unnoticed they can turn into a large-scale form of animal damage and ultimately would require some sort of animal control. Because they are herbivores they feast on ornamental plants along with various nuts and fruit trees.
  5. Woodchucks that actually have several different names like groundhog, whistle pig or land beaver is also from the rodent family. These are the largest rodents that we've talked about so far known to live in the north eastern and central part of the United States. Woodchucks are primarily herbivores eating grass and other vegetation like some agricultural crops. Their excellent burrow workers moving over two and a half tons of earth, creating a burrow that sometimes close to 50 feet long. These burrows often have between two and five separate entrances, as you can see would create quite a bit of animal damage.
