Always call the county prior to calling a plumber when you experience a sanitary sewer backup and you feel that the problem is in the county sewer main line. If the backup occurs only when facilities (such as toilet, tub, washer or sinks) are used, it is possible that you need a plumber. If you have sewage backing up when you are not using any of your facilities, Sewage Water Removal it is possible that there is a problem in the county main line. 

A Wastewater Collection Division representative will be dispatched to check the county sanitary sewer line. If the county line is operating normally, indications are that your private building sewer lateral is the cause of the sewer backup, Sewage Water Removal and you will be advised to contact a plumber. In Fairfax County, maintaining a private lateral line is the property owner's responsibility (see Chapter 65-6-1 of the County Code). 

To minimize property damage, immediately close all drain openings with stoppers or Sewage Water Removal plugs. Keep in mind that ceramic plumbing fixtures are fragile. Tub, sink and floor drains may need additional weight to keep them sealed. Do not run any water down your drains until the blockage has been cleared.

Check your insurance policy to determine if damages related to sewage backups or water damages are covered. This type of coverage may be an optional coverage Sewage Water Removal and can generally be added to a policy if requested. The cost for this optional coverage is inexpensive, and it is advised that property owners with below grade fixtures investigate this coverage.

Report a sanitary sewer overflow – raw untreated sewage that discharges from the sanitary sewer system – to our 24-hour Trouble Response Center. Avoid contact with overflow discharges, Sewage Water Removal and make sure that people are kept away from the area of overflow, especially children.

Overflows pose a substantial health risk as raw sewage can carry bacteria, viruses, molds and fungi. Sanitary sewer overflows can also cause poor water quality in lakes, rivers, streams, and Sewage Water Removal pollute groundwater, and they can cause economic damage by hurting water-dependent businesses such as fishing and tourism.

Diapers (cloth, disposable or "flushable") Facial tissues Dental floss Try to limit or eliminate your garbage disposal use. Consider composting your food waste items.What Can Be Flushed? Household ammonia-based cleaners, Sewage Water Removal drain cleaners and most bathroom cleaners can be poured down the drain inside your home. 

NEVER pour products down storm drains.How to Dispose of Hazardous Waste: Household Commercial Roots Shrubs and tree roots, Sewage Water Removal seeking moisture, will make their way into open sewer joints and sewer line cracks. Over time, roots cause your sewer line to break, which allows debris to accumulate and cause a backup. 

One way to prevent roots from entering your line is to replace your line Sewage Water Removal and tap with new plastic pipe. The other alternative is to be careful about planting trees and greenery around your sewer pipe. If you have continuing problems with tree roots in your lateral, you may have to have them cut periodically by a plumber. 

If you have a plumber clean roots out of your sewer lateral, please call the 24-hour Trouble Response Center so that we can also clean out the county sewer main line.Illegal Plumbing Connections Do not connect sump pumps, downspouts, French drains and Sewage Water Removal other flood control systems to your sanitary sewer; it is illegal, and debris and silt can clog your private sewer lateral. 

Consult a plumber to correct any illegal connections. Install a Backwater Prevention Valve A backwater valve is a fixture installed into a private sewer line to prevent sewer backflows. A properly installed and Sewage Water Removal maintained backwater valve allows sewage to leave the building but not to come back in. Property owners are responsible for the installation and maintenance of backwater valves. 

Check with a qualified plumber. Prevent Overflows Do not connect sump pumps, downspouts, French drains and Sewage Water Removal other flood control systems to your sanitary sewer as it is illegal. The water can overload the sewer system causing it to overflow raw sewage into streams, streets or basements. Check your sewer cleanout. 

Make sure the cap is on and has not been damaged. Replace missing caps. Avoid pouring grease down your sink. As the grease cools off, it will solidify either in the drain, Sewage Water Removal the property owner's lateral or the county sewer causing the line to clog.Collect kitchen grease in a container and dispose of it in the garbage. 

Avoid planting trees and shrubs above or near sanitary sewer lines. Roots can enter and clog sewers, Sewage Water Removal causing them to back up and overflow.We all play a part in preventing sewage backups and it all starts right in your kitchen . . .
