Crime Scene Cleanup >> Water Restoration

I have worked as a Water Restoration technician for many years, 19 to be exact and in all of the years that I've been doing this the crime scene cleanup jobs are by far the most interesting. Some people ask me how I can handle going into a gruesome environment, dealing with some of the grossest situations imaginable. I guess that I just have to look at it as a job that needs to be done. And everyone has to do something for a living. I'll tell you about a few of my experiences.

  1. Working in a large metropolitan area, I guess my crew and I we get to perform Water Restoration jobs from one extreme to the other. I hate to sound jaded and trying to pass off what we do as sounding sort of typical, but there does seem to be a pattern where some jobs seem like they're kind of run-of-the-mill. I guess what I mean is take for example a situation where a person passes away and they don't have any family members or friends. This person may go unnoticed for a considerable amount of time and depending on the time of year, the decomposing period can vary.
  2. And if this person has an animal that hasn't been able to go outside, the animal whether it's a cat or dog will defecate and urinate, making the Water Restoration job harder and more time-consuming. Some of my friends have asked me, "what was the worst type of Water Restoration that I have ever experienced”. Then I would ask them, "use your imagination, tell me, what do you think would be the worst?” One of my friends said, "I don't know, how about a suicide with the use of a gun?” I answered, "okay, let's say that somebody committed suicide with the use of a gun, but nobody discovered them for 4 1/2 weeks.
  3. Their body was badly decomposed, they were a meth addict, their house looked like it had not been cleaned in years. They had two dogs and in order not to starve to death they began to eat the body, they defecated and urinated all over the place.” That was probably the worst Water Restoration that I've ever seen, but you try to deal with these scenes the best you can. And this may seem brash, sometimes my co-workers and I, we joke about what we have seen to try to somewhat minimize the situation.
  4. Then of course there are murders, like when a confrontation between two people that may have known each other for a long time has escalated to the point when one person loses control and kills the other. I've been in some homes where there was multiple killings and the amount of blood and other bodily fluids was massive, taking what seemed like forever to Water Restoration. Some people ask, "isn't there some other job that I would like to do?” And I always respond with, "there is no job that is perfect, all of them have their problems, and I just tried to do mine with the best attitude that I can?”
