Dehumidification >> Water Damage

Following any kind of water damage, whether it's from a ruptured water heater or from a flood, there will need to be Water Damage. Of course, the amount of water will make the water extraction procedures drastically different but the cleanup in some ways will be the same. Before any water damage cleanup job can begin the amount of area must first be assessed and the materials that need to be cleaned must be inspected.

  1. If you're dealing with a small area like say your water heater has sprung a leak or has seeped for a long period of time. There is some Water Damage but it is confined to a small space, mold and is beginning to be present, now as a general rule of thumb the remediation will require less control. The immediate area will need to be made off-limits, people that suffer from allergies or have extreme asthma should avoid this area. To make an attempt to contain the contamination the services in the work area should be covered by securing plastic sheets in order to minimize the dust and other debris and preventing any further contamination.
  2. In larger areas, such as caused by a flood, if there are anyone left in the Water Damage building. All occupants should leave the premises immediately, if this is the office work area, work should cease and the employees should be sent home. If this is a single dwelling home the people that reside there should take up residence at a motel. In order to contain the presence of mold the surfaces of the work areas should be covered with plastic sheeting to prevent dust and mold spores from any further Water Damage contamination. Seal the ventilation system, all heating ducts or grills in the work area with plastic sheeting.
  3. If the contaminated area is massive and there will be huge amounts of dust and a large concentration of visible heavy mold you must develop a Water Damage plan that is suitable for all parties concerned. The use of commercial dehumidifiers along with large exhaust fans equipped with high-efficiency particulate HEPA air filters will need to be set up. The consultation  with industrial hygienists and similar environmental health and safety professionals that have experience in the performance of mold remediation prior to this level of remediation. The inhalation concerns of the cleanup workers and mold remediation technicians when performing a Water Damage are of top priority.
  4. The suppression of mold spores, dust and other debris will be managed by re-wetting the materials, wrapping and ceiling the items that will be discarded and plastic bags or sheet plastic to reduce the spread of mold spores. By providing local and natural exhaust ventilation during all Water Damage phases will reduce the possibilities of any mold exposure. There will not be any eating, drinking, or smoking in these work areas, as soon as the area has been cleaned and thoroughly dried the use of the HEPA vacuum is also recommended for cleaning up fine dust particles.
