When dealing with larger Water Damage projects additional control measures should be applied for sensitive areas such as patient care, office settings or vivarium areas.  The application of these measures should be made on a case-by-case basis, such as enclose and close off critical areas with plastic sheeting, like openings to adjacent spaces. Secure the HVAC system, by sealing supplies ducting and return plenums and shutting off the system when possible.

    1. Maintain a very slight negative or neutral pressure, recirculate the air through a portable HEPA reusable filter.  If use of a HEPA filter or other portable system would disturb more dust and mold particles than it captures, or there's no possible discharge point that is away from occupied spaces, it must not be used during the Water Damage, demolition or cleanup. The portable Microcon Units will not be used for this purpose.  Microcon units are to be used for relatively “clean” document care environments, and not for controlling dusts and mold particles associated with demolition or construction projects.
    2. Place a drop cloth where needed and step-off mats outside of the Water Damage work area. The cleaning of all surfaces potentially impacted by the remediation work, as well as including all spaces beyond the immediate work area.  Cleaning will include the use of a HEPA vacuum, damp cleansing of desks or other hard surfaces where people could come into contact with released mold spores, and in document care or other highly sensitive restoration areas it may also include damp sponge cleaning of walls and ceilings to remove and release materials.
    3. After the repairs and Water Damage remediation are complete, a re-inspection of the area after 24-48 hours to re-confirm the conditions are acceptable. The document restoration supervisor and/or project manager must verify the satisfactory completion for small jobs or jobs where there is very little or no potential impact of the restoration employee health. The overall project supervisor should contact the homeowner or business manager to help verify that large or complicated projects, or sensitive areas, have been completely and restored to acceptable conditions. The following practices must be required for all document cleanup employees performing the dehumidification/restoration work.
    4. Wear disposable foot and body covers and appropriate disposable rubber gloves during the Water Damage remediation.  Discard these items in a sealed, sterile container or bags before leaving the remediation vicinity to prevent tracking or the releasing of contaminated materials.  Put on new foot protective covers and disposable gloves when you reenter the site. Tyvek disposable one-piece suits/coveralls, and hairnets in most cases, are absolutely required to protect both the employee and to minimize the spreading of mold dusts and contaminants outside of the worksite.  If disposable protective clothing is worn, dispose of it in a sealed bag or container before leaving the remediation area. Always wear appropriate eye protection for work that might expose you to eye hazards. Be sure to wash your hands, face, and any other exposed skin before leaving the Water Damage worksite, or as soon as possible afterwards.
