Document restoration >> Flood Damage

The following information is primarily useful to libraries that have been damaged in recent storms, this information is also helpful to those persons trying to salvage important, valuable and historic belongings and collections. In some Flood Damage cases the use of scanning and digital edit and using imaging editing programs could help to save items and to repair torn and damaged spaces. Local museums, photographers, and librarians could also be of help addressing questions.

  1. If there is a presence of mold, the use of a respirator an N 95 HEPA air filter or better should be worn. Some mold varieties are toxic and if any health effects are noted, contact your doctor, when cleaning items that have dry mold, make sure the mold spores are somehow drawn away from you, for example by the use of a vacuum cleaner. Be sure to wash your hands after handling any Flood Damage materials with mold or mold spores. Air drying documents by the use of fans to provide maximum air circulation might work, make sure not to aim the fans directly at the document materials.
  2. Absorb as much excess moisture by using a clean sponge, white paper or clean the bath towels. Do not blot on hand written ink or other fragile surfaces. And especially do not use printed newsprint for blotting because the ink will transfer. When air drying paper Flood Damage, posters or maps, the paper is very fragile when wet and must be handled with extreme care and must provide adequate support. Blot excess water from the documents, try not to attempt to separate individual items while they are very wet, you could leave them in stacks of no higher than 1/4 inch to dry.
  3. If the pages can be separated safely, they can be interleaved by the use of an absorbent or separated Flood Damage material, such as waxed paper. Constantly changed the interleaving materials until the items are dry and clean the window screens stacked with bricks or blocks of wood between them this will provide a drying surface with the maximum air circulation. If you're drying items on a hard surface, cover the surface with absorbent materials and change them when they're wet. When the Flood Damage items are almost dry, be sure to place them between protective sheets such as unprinted paper and store them with a light weight on them to flatten.
  4. If the items are too wet when they are placed under the weights, you may create an environment for the growth of mold. When air drying framed Flood Damage items you must place the frame glass side down and then remove all of the backing materials. Carefully remove the object and air dry, if the object is stock and clinging to the glass, to not remove but instead dry the frame with the object still inside, with the class side down on a flat surface. When air drying books, position the books so they are fanned open and stand them on their top or bottom edge and never stand them on their front edge.
