Document restoration >> Dehumidification

The very first step in any water damaged document restoration is to document very item and categorize them to resemble some kind of system. To assist in the documentation  step is good to light and separate dry, damp and water soaked documents. Upon the recommendation of the supervisor overseeing the restoration  step or a restoration specialist that is brought in for extremely delicate Dehumidification situations.

  1. Completely saturated Dehumidification might need to be frozen in preparation of the freeze drying  step. Depending on the amount of documents involved, the off-site facility that is owned by the restoration specialist might be used for this reason if a suitable onsite portable freezer storage could be secured. There are two kinds of water damage. Direct damage that occurs when important documents are totally saturated. Or there is secondary water damage happens when documents are slightly damp due to high relative humidity related to flooding or a plumbing pipe break. The techniques for document restoration should include the following, air drying any water damaged materials such as Dehumidification or works of art.
  2. This step is fast and very effective with smaller amounts of documents with secondary water damage. In this step, the water soaked documents are carefully pulled apart and spread out in a cool, dry, flat surface. Drying fans and air conditioning are to be used to move dry air over the documents. This step requires a lot of patience and should complete within 72 hours. Next, it's time to bring in the dehumidifiers and air movers, with this technique is used with larger amounts of documents that have sustained secondary water damage. In this step, the documents are often left in their initial containers and dehumidifiers and air movers are brought into the restoration facility.
  3. Depending on the amounts of Dehumidification involved, this step could take several weeks to complete. Because there is the chance of residual water damage if this step is not done just right, this step should be used only after the advice of a document restoration specialist and only if dehumidifiers and air movers are available in adequate quantity and ability. Freezing is recommended when your documents have received direct water damage. Generally done by a document restoration specialist, this step entails separating the documents and placing them in special drying containers in commercial freezers.
  4. Depending on the amounts of Dehumidification involved, this step could often require at least several months to complete. The full recovery of documents damaged due to fire is less probable than documents damaged by water. For this reason, duplication and offsite storage of extremely important documents is imperative. Documents that are damaged by fire, that may be recoverable will most likely have a permanent smoke odor. In these cases where it is absolutely necessary, a step called "dry cleaning" might eliminate most, if not all of the smoke odor. This step is generally done by a document restoration specialist and requires treating each page of the affected Dehumidification with a special solvent and allowing them to thoroughly dry.
