Animal Damage >> Natural Repellents

Some people like to spend a lot of time and maybe a lot of money on their garden. But it can be frustrating when raccoons, rabbits, deer and other animal damage is destroying your garden. Animal control repellents might work, but they also might damage your plants. There are a number of natural remedies you can use that will protect your plants and will not harm the animals or your yard. Let's explore these possibilities.

  1. Putting up a fence could work depending on which kind of animals you're dealing with for rabbits the fence would have to have very small openings, as they can squeeze through most picket fences. If we're talking about raccoons, because raccoons live in trees the can usually climb most wooden fences and probably chain-link fence too. If you're dealing with deer, the deer can jump pretty high fences, so they would probably have to be 6 feet higher or taller. Also many fences will be a barrier from you being able to enjoy the beauty of your garden. And if you're dealing with animals that can burrow and cause other animal damage a fence might not work.
  2. One trick is to incorporate human scent, animals tend to stay clear when they believe that a human is close by. That's why hunters will douse themselves with natural scents to hide or mask their own human scent. By taking some human hair clippings and spread them throughout your garden and along the perimeter this may keep your garden free from animal damage. But the strongest human scent of all is human urine, it might not be a good idea to sprinkle it on your flowers and plants but on the ground around the outside edges of your garden might just do the trick.
  3. Certain animals tend to stay away from certain kinds of plants. Deer tend to stay away from yarrow, sunflower and daffodils they will not eat them and so if you create a barrier using these plants the deer may ignore your other plants. Rabbits usually stay clear of garlic, chives, lavender, onions, marigolds and thyme. Since rabbits have a keen sense of smell this very well likely to deter them from chewing on your more delectable plants. You could save yourself from a lot of animal damage by using the natural repellent catnip. Many animals do not like this but unfortunately's cats do, if there is a lot of cats in your neighborhood you might be trading off one pest for another.
  4. Probably the oldest form of a natural deterrent is the good old scarecrow. This has saved many gardens from extensive animal damage and a simple form of animal control. This form of animal deterrent has been used in many cultures, maybe one of the earliest is in Japan around 700 AD. They're very easy to make, usually driving a pole into the ground vertically and attaching another pole horizontally and covering this using old clothes. These close don't have to be colorful because most animals are colorblind, but for the decoration standpoint, the more color the better.
